2 hour class
In this class, we will use flowers and plants as a starting point to create a range of sketches using different techniques, materials and surfaces. The focus of the session will be on really looking at the object and letting your hand follow your eyes, not your brain. You will experience the joy of simply looking without judging or interpreting what's in front of you in order to create vibrant and detailed drawings.
We will look at the work of other artists and their use of shading techniques, which we will practice and experiment with. This class is an excellent introduction to drawing. It is suitable for anyone who wants to draw, even those of you who think you can't (you can). Marie is extremely supportive and encouraging. She will guide you through a fun set of activities aimed at relaxing in front of a subject and trust in oneself.
This class can also be booked as part of the first session of a three week course, for a discounted price. This can be found in the listing as Drawing and Painting Course.

About your host, Marie Lenclos
Marie is a French painter and educator who lives and works in South-East London. She came to London in the 90s to study art at Camberwell College of Art, and never left. London is her home, her inspiration, her community.
Marie started painting at thirteen and painted regularly through her twenties. But then life took over and she stopped painting for twenty years. In that time she had two children, created a video production company, and ran a film club for kids at her local cinema. She also did a PGCE in adult learning and has been teaching creative subjects (stop-motion animation, digital projects, photography and art) in community settings for the last ten years.
The urge to paint came back in 2015, after a summer in Brittany playing around with oils and brushes. She now paints everyday from her studio in Loughborough Junction and is building a growing recognition in and out London. She regularly shows and sells her paintings.
Teaching art is a capital aspect of Marie's creative life. Having come back to her own practice so long after her formative years, Marie has a passion for nurturing the transformative experience of art in others. She excels in creating a generous and friendly climate where students are given time and space to really observe, slow down and experience the joy of making pictures . Her students are encouraged to pause and bring a moment of calm into their busy lives. Most report a greater sense of wellbeing and confidence after a class: Marie believes that this is because connections are made, between oneself and the world around us, between fellow students, between internal and external life.
You don't need to bring anything. The various materials we will use (graphite, charcoal, paper, and more) will be supplied.
