Botanical Blueprint: Cyanotype Printmaking Workshop

This was a really inspiring class.  The cyanoprint technique is very accessible but we also learned about other historical methods, such as Daguerreotypes.  Magda is very friendly and enthusiastic as well as knowledgeable and her work is just amazing.  I don't live in London but I really hope to be able to do another workshop with her.  My interest in photography has been rekindled!The venue is quirky and worth a visit in itself. It's nothing modern or glamorous, being a dark basement that seems very appropriate for a photography developing class.  There's an interesting little bookshop above, as well as a tiny theatre.  I now feel 100% confident to carry out my own cyanotype printing this summer!

I had a great afternoon at Magda's studio in Soho.  The studio is a small,  lovely, quirky space filled with the camera's Magda uses to create her own beautiful work. She kicked off the course by explaining cyanotype printing and the process and materials (non toxic!) involved. She also explained some other types of printing and showed us various examples.  After that, we spend the rest of the available time experimenting and creating 3 prints each that you get to take home. It was amazing to see how the prints turned out and really happy with the results. Can't wait to experiment at home!

My husband and I had a wonderful time with Magda today. Cyanotype printing is really simple but completely magical - the process happens right before your eyes and is very dramatic. Magda gave us some interesting background on the cyanotype process and put it in context alongside similar techniques. She then walked us through creating our own prints, and we came away with some beautiful prints that are destined for the living room wall.  Magda is a talented photographer and artist and we enjoyed seeing some of her work using other techniques while waiting for our prints to dry.

You will be equipped with a cyanotype mini set that will be sent to you over the post. This  kit will introduce you to the basics of the cyanotype printmaking process  using watercolour paper, cyanotype paint and sunlight to create your own botanical images.  Cyanotype process allows one to create beautiful floral prussian blue prints - learn about its history and chemistry! Explore it with your family or kids and experience a fun and creative time in the comfort of your home.

Please adhere to instructions included in the kit (available also as pdf). On the following video you can observe process of cyanotype printmaking using a UV lamp for exposure-at home conditions you will be using sunlight as your light source. This is because cyanotype paint is light sensitive mainly to UV light and sunlight is the greatest source of UV. Besides, this is how folks did it back in the beginning of 19th century when cyanotype was invented ! 

Correct length of exposure is crucial- if the print is not exposed enough, it will wash off the paper during washing stage-see the tips below: 
1. Choose a very sunny day!
2. If you can, take your print for exposure outside and place it in direct sunlight-you will instantly see colour change. Give it 7-10 minutes. If there is no sun, give it at least 20 min or more-do a smaller print as a test. 
*Good idea is to do something called a test strip. Start with small piece of paper, follow the instructions and once your print is ready to be exposed, expose small part of the print by covering the rest (with a book for example)  for about 8 min. Once 8 minutes has passed, uncover more of the print, count another 8 min and keep going until you no longer have more space on the paper. Wash the print, dry it and check which exposure satisfies you the most-the longer time you expose, the deeper blue colour you'll get. 
3. If you can't expose your print outdoor, do so by the window. Open it, if you can-that will speed the process. This is because windows glass filters some of the UV. If your window is in direct sun, exposure could be as fast as 15 minutes. If its in the shadow, consider exposing it even for 2 h or longer, do a test trip first starting with 20min. 
4.Its hard to judge the exact exposure time as its based on your specific location so don't get discouraged if your print washes off-keep exposing it for longer and you'll most definitely get the result :)
5. Try starting with objects that are opaque like leaves, flowers household objects (make sure they are flat enough to fit in your frame!). Its virtually impossible to over-exposed those, while if you're printing object that is very thin and delicate (like leaf skeleton, thin lace etc.) you can easily overexpose it and you'll be left with a blue piece of paper with no imprint on it. Try to think of it as casting the shadows!

As an educator, leading alternative and historical  photographic techniques  workshops. Collaborated with various acclaimed art institutions and galleries, such as British Museum,  University of Arts London and more. 


The idea of alternative workshops is to bring to the wider public -adults, children, seniors- range of workshops which aim to raise awareness about very beginnings of photography and encourage experimenting with them in most creative way. Whether experienced or not, workshops are tailored for various kinds of audience, from small groups to community engagement projects. My journey with historical processes began in 2013 and since then through experience in both education and hands on photography assignments I gained excellent skill set which includes range of photographic techniques: more experimental and complex such as wet plate collodion photographic glass plate process invented in 1856, gum bichromate, salt print, as well as those bacis and simple to use like cyanotype, anthotype or pinhole photography.
For last few years I have taken part in several festivals, larger community projects and private events internationally, providing participants with a great deal of knowledge, experience and entertainment.

 In the past I have collaborate with various art institutions and galleries across London, including University of Arts London, British Museum, Four Corners Gallery, providing all sorts of unique, historical  for local communities and participants of all levels of experience: adults, seniors, children and people with learning disabilities.
