What you will do
Six session course
This six week mixed ability course will take you through the basics of the pottery throwing. No previous experience of working with clay is required!
You will be guided through clay preparation, from throwing on the pottery wheel, to refining and glazing your works. Beginners will learn clay preparation, throwing and trimming. For experienced learners, we can tailor the workshop to focus on any techniques or shapes you would like to improve on.
It will be taught in a relaxing environment in a small group of five, and you will be guaranteed a wheel to use every class, with no need to share. All tools and materials are included. Firing is charged at £1 per 100g weight of clay.
Included among techniques, but not limited to:
- Clay preparation
- Throwing on the potter's wheel: centring, opening, pulling up, shaping.
Date and time: Term 1&2: this course will run for 13 weeks with 1 week break on 31st October, on the following dates: 19-Sep, 26-Sep, 3-Oct , 10-Oct, 17-Oct, 24-Oct, 7-Nov, 14-Nov, 21-Nov, 28-Nov, 5-Dec, 12-Dec. You would be expected to attend all sessions, however, if under exceptional circumstances that you have to miss sessions, you will be allowed to make up a maximum of one session in another class provided availability. You will not be entitled to refund for any missing sessions

About your host, Clover & Emilia Pottery
About the Studio: Located in a light industry building 10 minute walk from South Wimbledon or Morden Station (Northern Line), Studio 3 is run by two resident ceramic artists Clover and Emilia. The studio is equipped with 8 pottery wheels, and over 20 glazes, two on site kilns and plenty of shelving to store works.
Please noted: The studio will be relocated to Clapham South in February 2020. The new studio is located in a residential area, formally a stable, 10 minute walk from Clapham South (Northern Line).
About the Classes: You will be taught in a relaxing and creative environment in a small group of up to 8, targeting on throwing on a potter's wheel. No previous experience of working with clay is required. Beginners will learn clay preparation, throwing and trimming. For experienced learners, we can tailor the workshop to focus on any techniques or shapes you would like to improve on.
Our theTutors: Clover Lee: a London base craft potter, a finalist of BBC reality talent show The Great Pottery Throwdown 2017. She started her pottery journey in 2011 as an evening student before becoming a full time potter in 2018. Clover is proud of her Asian heritage and creates a mixture of functional and stunning items - such as bonsai planters, decorative vases, sake sets, mugs and tableware. She says she is "inspired by the traditional art and culture of China and Japan".
Emilia Radlinska: trained as a ceramicist at the Australian National University (Canberra School of Art). Since graduating in 2002 she has practised, exhibited and taught ceramics in Australia, the USA and for the last five years, at the Glasgow Ceramics Studio in Scotland.
Akiko Matsuda: born in Kanagawa, Japan, graduated fromTama Art University in Tokyo which she majored in ceramics. After setting up her own studio in Tokyo called ‘Akopottery’ and achieved great success, she uprooted herself to London in 2018 where she was of

Please bring any inspirational items, such as sketchbooks, examples of works you really like, or your own works. As well as this, comfortable clothing that you don’t mind getting dirty, and your own apron if you have one. If you have long hair please tie them back.
