Classes

2 hour workshop

Daytime

An introduction to pottery for beginners where you will learn how to throw on the pottery wheel.

This is a one-to one tuition class.

During the 2 hours lesson Baba will teach you how to throw a pot on the wheel. You'll begin by starting from scratch, including how to prep the clay that you will then use on the wheel. Once you have moved onto the wheel, Baba will guide you through how to create a little bowl. You'll learn how to centre the clay on the wheel, which is what you really need to perfect as a beginner. You'll learn how to shape the pot, including how to create a rim on the bowl. All the material will be provided on the day. You can collect your creation few weeks later, after it has been fired.

I really enjoyed this class with Barbara. It was my first time on a potters wheel and I was really comfortable knowing that is was one-on-one tuition so all the teaching attention would be on myself. I knew I wouldn't take naturally to it, so this was vital! After prepping the clay, which was a really interesting addition to the class, Barbara demonstrated on the wheel how to make a bowl. She made it look easy but all the same was very confident and patient when it was my turn on the wheel. I was really impressed with what I managed to create. I like the fact Barbara was quite hands-off once I got on the wheel, she let me make my own mistakes and then taught me how to correct them. I'd definitely go back for more classes. I love Thames Side Studios as well, what an awesome atmosphere out there!

I spent 3 days at Baba ceramics and loved it , Baba was very patient and knowledgeable , an excellent teacher , I would recommend anyone who is interested in working on a pottery wheel to give it a go , being shown what to do properly made all the difference , I can’t wait to continue practicing when I get back home and when I am ready to further my knowledge on the wheel I will certainly be hoping to go back . Many thanks Baba x

Notes

Wear comfortable clothes that you don't mind getting a bit messy, there will be aprons provided, but you may way to bring your own. Long nails don't work for pottery I'm afraid, it's better to have short, trimmed nails!
