We will learn centralizing the clay and pulling the wall, making the basic cylinder. We use basic stoneware clay, it's very good for throwing. 

The beginner or refreshing course gives you enough time to improve and finish some work, learning pulling handles, mostly the basic things. 

The taster session gives you a picture of working with your hand and get messy with clay. You can create some finished work at the end of the course, all fired and glazed too.

If you have an apron, please bring it along.

Beginner Pottery Throwing Course

Edit Juhasz designs hand thrown porcelain table-wares. She has always been fascinated with functionality and shapes. 

She throws the porcelain thin, to emphasize the beauty of the body. She likes to create comfortable forms for everyday use. She teaches regularly from his Finsbury Park studio. Edit does throwing for more than 20 years. Her classes are small 3-4 people, so she can focus on the students.

She has a taster class, which is good for a complete beginner, who wants to have  a go on the potters wheel and have an experience with the clay.

The beginner or refreshing course, gives you enough time to create some work and do some basic work (handles, trimming, glazing) with the clay.

Pottery Workshop

On this throwing workshop, you will learn a little about the properties of clay and the importance of wedging. You will also learn how to centre, open and pull up the walls of your pot. There will be a maximum of seven people on this throwing workshop and each person will have their own dedicated wheel for the entire length of the session. There will also be two teachers with a teacher/student ratio of 1 teacher to 3.5 students. Please note, this is a group class. If you are looking for 1 to 1 teaching (one teacher to one participant) or 1 to 2 (one teacher to two participants) then you may find that a private session works best for you.

You can keep your best pot to take home, after it has been fired and glazed for you.  Please note that the last 10 minutes of the class is dedicated to studio practice, which involves cleaning of your wheel and tools.

What happens to your pots after they have been thrown?
At the end of the workshop you will choose your best piece or pot to keep. Two days after the workshop, your pot will be turned (trimmed) on the wheel for you.  Your pot will then be put on a shelf to dry for several days. Once dry, it will be ready for it’s first bisque firing in the kiln. After the bisque fire, your pot will be glazed and once again put through the kiln, but this time for the final glaze firing.

As you can see, your wheel throwing  experience is only a small part of a much, much longer and very labour intensive process. Turning (trimming and shaping your pot on the wheel) and glazing are all part of the making process and just as important as throwing on the wheel.

When your work is ready for collection, usually two or three weeks after the class, you will be able to collect your pieces! Collection is from Sak Beh Pottery and the collection dates are listed on the Sak Beh Website. So please check the Sak Beh Website for your collection date by clicking the tab, collection of pots. We don’t send out emails as they tend to go to spam folders or are not read.

Due to limited shelf and storage space, pots or work that remain uncollected one month after notification will (sadly) be disposed of.

(If you wish to keep a second pot, there will be an extra charge of £8.)

Intensive Wheel Throwing Workshop

Want to have a go on the potter's wheel and also hand-sculpt a small pot?
We welcome you to have a taste of both at Maison S.Sommet!

This experienced and friendly team offers a warm, stylish and spacious pottery studio, the perfect place to unwind with clay. They are passionate ceramicists and will make sure you make the most of it.

You will be welcomed with a beautiful set-up of your own tools and your own desk space to create amazing handmade pottery. You'll then kick off the learning portion of the class with demonstrations on the secrets of sculpting.

Learn about coiling and all the tricks to wheel throwing in only a few hours. Your teacher will also have prepared clay coils for you to use so when it’s your turn to get your hands messy, you'll be confident to create your fun masterpiece!

Finally decorate your pieces with a selection of 8 colouring slip before you go!

At the end of the class, your beautiful pottery pieces will be taken away to be professionally glazed and fired, ready to collect after 3 weeks to display at home or give away as handmade gifts! (Optional delivery can be arranged on the day).

Your preferred ceramic piece comes with the cost of the workshop, any other additional pieces you would like to keep are £5 per item, remember to bring cash on the day.

Pottery taster- Hand-building & Wheel Throwing 

The classes are run by artists with over 20 years experience who have an amazing passion for their art forms. The artists will inspire you to explore your creativity in a relaxed learning environment. These classes cover the basics as well as more advanced techniques – dive in at whatever level suits you!

For drop-ins you create a mosaic tile to take home. The studio shelves are full of treasure for you to use. One of the best stocked mosaic studios in London. The range is unbelievable.
You will be introduced to the fundamentals of mosaic which can allow you to progress onto further projects, e.g a mosaic art piece, plant pot, mirror frame, table top - we have all the bases for you to choose.

Our studio is set in a gated community garden which makes it a quiet and relaxing environment.

* Twickenham Studio  *is only 5 mins. walk from Twickenham mainline station. (25 mins Waterloo station) With no  more than four students and a no rush policy Twickenham classes have  more or less all the advantages of a private class, with a friendly atmosphere and tea and coffee provided plus a glass of wine if the mood takes us.

Kingston upon Thames Studio is above Cass Art, in Clarence Street, a convenient town centre location and only 5 mins. was;k from the mainline station.. We begin with Colour ! * *(Allan will supply paper for this exercise) and we conclude the class with a painting of your own.  Allan's easy to follow colour technique will familiarise you with the painters palette, teaching you how to mix all those great colours before you test your skills with a small painting on your own canvas copied from an image/still life supplied. Two Easy Steps is all it takes on Allan's ONE DAY TWO PART PLAN   Designed to teach you the basics of oil painting and enable you to successfully develop your future as a painter, Allan focuses on the basic knowledge of oil paint and colour,  in the first part of this class and in the second puts your skills to test when you paint your own picture with ongoing support.

Part 1 : The Essentials 11.30am -1.00pm

Primary, complimentary secondary, tertiary colours Relationships between colour combinations, oppositional energising and harmonious warm and cool colours. Mix a custom palette and save money when purchasing your “start up” colour palette tube paints. You are now ready to tackle your first painting.

Break

Part 2 : Paint Your Picture 2.00pm -5.00pm.

Paint Materials and images provided. Please supply your own canvas and we will provide an image or bring your own image if you want to paint a favourite.

You will learn and have continuing support with - composition, canvas wash, blocking in, bringing your painting to completion. Finding and developing your own style, application techniques, impasto and/or thin glazing, colour saturation, blending, painting wet on wet, volume, perspective and much more.

Oil Painting Art Classes, Beginners, Refreshers, Saturday, Sunday, Weekday, Evening, Classes

The workshop is about learning the use of traditional Japanese hand tools, the process of inking wood blocks, printing on different types of handmade paper and developing a new understanding of various techniques in woodcut art. All of which enable you to make numerous fine art prints to take away at the end of the session.

Everyone will be provided with:
Sets of 5 traditional Japanese hand tools
1 x 4mm A4 Shina ply woodblock - slightly smaller block for evening session
Blocks can be cut and printed on both sides
3 x types of printmaking papers (including Japanese Hosho paper)
Water-based inks, pencils etc. - Pre-cut shapes and pattern blocks to use in compositions.
Tubes are provided for all prints to take away at the end of the session.

Intro - Cups of tea, coffee or soft drinks followed by some words
from Alex on his printmaking career.

Throughout the session,  Alex will give an overview of this ancient art form (woodcut is the oldest print process) and has a culturally rich history in China, Japan, Mexico, Brazil and most recently in Germany with the Expressionists. Contemporary artists such as  Grayson Perry, Tom Hammick, Christiane Baumgartner, Eileen Cooper and Rebecca Salter continue to inspire and push the medium into new and exciting places.

Stage 1 - Alex will cover the use of hand tools to design, draw and cut woodblocks and explore the process of hand printing using traditional Japanese barens (circular discs wrapped in bamboo) and rollers on three types of paper.

Stage 2 - Delve a little deeper, with examples on how to use multiple blocks, reduction-cutting techniques and the importance of block registration to create more complex multi colour prints.

Stage 3 - This a perfect opportunity to make multiply prints through editions, ending the final part of the session by experimenting with your favourite design or playing with various colours.

Stage 4 - Everyone's prints will be individually wrapped in sheets of tissue paper and rolled up into tubes for safe passage home.

Learn Woodcut Printmaking With An Artist

You can make up to 3 pieces using these skills, which will then be bisque-fired, dipped in our beautiful stoneware glazes, and fired again. Most of our glaze choices are dinnerware safe. The results are stunning! You receive your posted creations within a month, imagine the magical moment when you open your box to reveal the results!

The vessels/pots can be for functional ware or try small sculptural work. You are welcome to come with your own ideas during the mindful 2.5 hours of making with the full support of an experienced ceramic tutor to help you realise your creative design ideas. No experience is necessary as the session is beginner-friendly as well for the more advanced participants.

The popular venue is our stunning Art4Space community arts centre, which is an inclusive, supportive, respectful, welcoming, safe space for everyone. Proceeds go towards our community art projects providing vulnerable individuals with mental health support in deprived areas in Lambeth, London.

For private bookings, we can also arrange to come to your venue. Please note it is £54 per person for 2-2.5-hour workshop, plus travel expenses. We are flexible with timing; day, evening or weekend, according to availability.

One of Alternative London's expert street artist guides will take you on a graffiti and street art walking tour (1.30 - 1.45hrs) of East London where you'll see some of the World's finest street art by Banksy, ROA, Shepard Fairey, Jimmy C, Invader, Stik and many many more. Then, after a refreshment break it's back to the Alternative London for a 2.15hrs workshop to try it for yourself!

All welcome regardless of artistic ability as the Alternative London team will teach you spray can techniques and all you need to know to draw, cut and create your own single or multi layered stencil and build your own unique piece of street art.

Kintsugi Class For Beginner's, Japanese Ceramics


This is a great introduction to pottery in a small class with lots of teacher support. There is a maximum of seven students to two teachers.  That’s 3.5 students to one teacher. If you are looking for one to one attention please consider a Private Class.

As an introduction to pottery, this class comprises of both throwing on the wheel and hand building. You will have your own dedicated wheel. We also offer beginner classes devoted solely to wheel throwing and beginner classes solely devoted to hand building. But if you just want to give everything a go in a relaxed and bright studio, then this is a perfect first step into pottery.

This is a fun class and you will be shown how to centre your clay on the wheel, open your pot and pull up the walls. You will also be shown how to make pots using hand building techniques involving the manipulation of clay, using the hand only. These techniques are pinching, coiling and slab building.

At the end of your class you can keep your best pot which will be fired twice and glazed for you in our lovely studio white glaze. Each week we'll be experimenting with different techniques, and different things to draw. Some weeks will feel hard, some will feel easy but you’ll be amazed at what you can do.

From still life to life drawing, we like to play around, try different things and push your limits occasionally.

Expect people to be chatting, and supporting each other because our community is at the heart of the class and we welcome anyone who wants to join! Or if you want to sit and draw quietly, you can switch your camera off and we’ll respect your mindful time as you listen to the chitter chatter of our students.

With an inclusive environment and atmosphere, ArtistAnd now teaches in corporate settings as well as classes online and in person for the public.

Your chosen pieces can be professionally glazed and fired for an additional fee of £5 only.

Select from 2 beautiful stoneware glazes (blue or clear)- food-safe, microwave-safe, and dishwasher-safe.

We provide prepared clay, tools, and aprons - just dress to get messy and remember to trim those nails.
Step into our inviting and intimate studio, where classes are limited to 12 attendees for small group experience.
