Classes

4 hour workshop

Daytime

First off, you'll discuss any ideas and inspiration over a cup of tea/drink until you have a good vision of what you want to paint. The theme is abstract landscapes but if you have another idea in mind, that’s fine. Just bring an image for inspiration and Georgie will get you set up. If you prefer more structure, she can provide images for inspiration or guide you in creating a work from your imagination. Soon you'll get stuck into your canvas, first applying a variety of textural layers.

After an hour or two painting we'll stop for lunch cooked by neighbour and Hawksmoor chef Alice Wilson. She will bring a hamper full of delights such as lamb samosas, fennel, almond and parsley salad, beetroot tsatziki, raspberry and vanilla cupcakes, to give you an idea. There will be something to suit most dietary requirements but do let me know if you have any allergies etc. If you would like an alcoholic drink, please bring your own! After lunch we will wander round the farm and meet the animals.

In the afternoon you’ll continue working on the paintings, adding more textures and then layers of colour, and finally working over all this in more detail with a variety of mediums. You can use oil paints if you wish, at an extra cost.

Then it's goodbye and you can take your paintings home with you. All in all a wholesome, unique and creative way to spend your day!

I really loved the Tuesday class, Georgie is so helpful and friendly, and was able to provide some really useful techniques to everyone! It didn't feel like being in London at all, with the sound of farm animals in the background it couldn't have been a better location. 5 stars to the chef who prepared our delicious lunch! Highly recommend this class to anyone, thank you Georgie!

Georgie is a warm, friendly and encouraging teacher and her studio in Stepney City Farm is wonderful oasis, you can't help but unwind and feel those creative juices flow - surrounded by the colour, light and openness Georgie has created in the space. After a few hours of experimenting with textures and styles we had a walk round the farm in the glorious sunshine and came back to a delicious lunch laid on by Alice - beautifully made vegetable tarts, seasonal salads and an unbelievably good blueberry loaf cake! We finished off the day with a bit more painting and a few rounds of tea and then took our works of art home. Such a wonderful day that coming home afterwards felt like coming back from a holiday!

I had such an inspiring day on the farm and in the studio with Georgie. We all learnt lots of new and effective techniques for creating texture and it was great having the use of all the paints and products to try out ideas. Lunch cooked by Alice was delicious and our walk around the farm a lovely addition to the day. Georgie is a really kind and excellent teacher - she just came up with the prefect suggestion each time I wasn't quite sure which direction to go in and I was really pleased with my finished picture! I'd highly recommend this day for complete beginners or practising artists alike - it was utterly therapeutic.

Georgie's art class was such fun. The venue helped set the scene and the room was light and airy and we were able to work with the doors open which was great. Georgie was a great teacher who allowed us to go with our ideas and managed to input when it was needed in a positive way that didn't quash confidence and creativity. We were encouraged to use a range of different materials and resources which was a real bonus and meant I could experiment, make mistakes and learn. I finished the day energised and excited about my next piece of art. Thank you Georgie for a really great day. P.S. The lunch was yummy too!

Painting and Food on a Farm by Georgie Mason Studio - art in London

About your host, Georgie Mason Studio

Georgie is an abstract landscape/seascape painter working from her studio on Stepney City Farm in East London.

She has been teaching art classes for years, from home in Suffolk, then from Stoke Newington Old Church and at Artbox charity in London. Since moving to the city farm she has held landscape painting classes and 'Paint with Georgie' Saturday classes from her studio. The set-up is ideal, with glass double doors looking out onto the farm, animals all around, and neighboured by a spoon-carver and a ceramicist. It's a wholesome and creative environment, physically close but atmospherically very far from the hustle and bustle of the city. The classes are relaxed and Georgie offers guidance and structure but also allows for freedom of expression and if people want to experiment or do it their way, they're more then welcome!

In her own work, Georgie is inspired by the natural world, having been brought up in the Suffolk countryside. She uses a variety of materials to build texture including polyfilla and mud form the farm. Since graduating from a degree in English Literature and History of Art at Nottingham University in 2014, she has had work accepted into the Royal Academy Summer Exhibition, the Affordable Art Fairs and had solo shows at Boston Consulting Group, Palm Tree Gallery and Lavenham Hall Gallery. She’s had work shortlisted for the NEAC Annual Exhibition and NOA Prize and was winner of the Harry Walker Prize at the BSA Annual Exhibition. Her work is held in the private collection of the Museum of Goa in India and in boutique hotels across the UK.
