Title: Selecting a composition & painting a corner of the studio
This will include colour mixing practice and an emphasis on shape and proportion.

We believe that to break into a good oil painting you need more than a couple of hours so we will be continuing from week 1.

Intermediate Oil Painting Course

Born in London, Sue studied Art at Harrow School of Art and DeMontfort University and was awarded a Royal Society Of Arts Travel Scholarship & Associate membership.  She produced props and set design painting for major London theatres,  followed by textile design for the Scandinavian market at the legendary Bernat Klein Studios.  

After six years as Head of Furnishing Textile Design at Liberty of London, Sue concentrated on her own art establishing the Hope Collection with her husband prior to entering into teaching art to adults and children.  She was Head of Art and Head of History of Art at St. James Senior Girls School and is an OCR A-Level Moderator of Art and AQA - A Level History of Art Examiner.

Sue has been successfully running art classes in a variety of disciplines, at the Watermans Art Centre, Brentford, since February 2018
Since lockdown she has given online watercolour classes to adults. As these classes have proved to be very popular, she is intending to continue for the foreseeable future, thus enabling a wider geographical area to be covered.

The classes are run by artists with over 20 years experience who have an amazing passion for their art forms. The artists will inspire you to explore your creativity in a relaxed learning environment. These classes cover the basics as well as more advanced techniques – dive in at whatever level suits you!

For drop-ins you create a mosaic tile to take home. The studio shelves are full of treasure for you to use. One of the best stocked mosaic studios in London. The range is unbelievable.
You will be introduced to the fundamentals of mosaic which can allow you to progress onto further projects, e.g a mosaic art piece, plant pot, mirror frame, table top - we have all the bases for you to choose.

Our studio is set in a gated community garden which makes it a quiet and relaxing environment.

Neon Naked Life Drawing Class

You can make up to 3 pieces using these skills, which will then be bisque-fired, dipped in our beautiful stoneware glazes, and fired again. Most of our glaze choices are dinnerware safe. The results are stunning! You receive your posted creations within 4-6 weeks, imagine the magical moment when you open your box to reveal the results!

The vessels/pots can be for functional ware or try small sculptural work. You are welcome to come with your own ideas during the mindful 2.5 hours of making with the full support of an experienced ceramic tutor to help you realise your creative design ideas. No experience is necessary as the session is beginner-friendly as well for the more advanced participants.

The popular venue is our stunning Art4Space community arts centre, which is an inclusive, supportive, respectful, welcoming, safe space for everyone. Proceeds go towards our community art projects providing vulnerable individuals with mental health support in deprived areas in Lambeth, London.

For private bookings, we can also arrange to come to your venue. Please note it is £54 per person for 2-2.5-hour workshop, plus travel expenses. We are flexible with timing; day, evening or weekend, according to availability.

Hand building pottery - Pinch, coil and slab building

This workshop is about learning the use of traditional Japanese hand tools, the process of inking wood blocks, printing on different types of handmade paper and developing a new understanding of various techniques in woodcut art, all of which will enable you to make fine art prints to take away at the end of the session.

For the workshop everyone will be provided with:
5x traditional Japanese hand tools
1x Shina ply woodblock - blocks can be cut and printed on both sides
3x types of printmaking papers (including Japanese Hosho paper)
Water-based inks, pencils etc.
Pre-cut shapes and pattern blocks to use in compositions.
Tubes for taking prints away at the end of the session.

Introduction - Cups of tea, coffee and soft drinks followed by an intro from Alex on printmaking and his career.

Throughout the session, Alex will give an overview of this ancient art form (woodcut is the oldest print process) and has a culturally rich history in China, Japan, Mexico, Brazil and most recently in Germany with the Expressionists. Contemporary artists such as  Grayson Perry, Tom Hammick, Christiane Baumgartner, Eileen Cooper and Rebecca Salter continue to inspire and push the medium into new and exciting places.

Stage 1 - Alex will cover the use of hand tools to design, draw and cut woodblocks and explore the process of hand printing using traditional Japanese barens (circular discs wrapped in bamboo) and rollers on three types of paper.

Stage 2 - Delve a little deeper, with examples on how to use multiple blocks, reduction-cutting techniques and the importance of block registration to create more complex multi colour prints.

Stage 3 - This a perfect opportunity to make multiply prints through editions, ending the final part of the session by experimenting with your favourite design or playing with various colours.

Stage 4 - Everyone will be provided with cardboard tubes for their prints to travel safely home.

Introduction to wheel throwing

This two-hour session is perfect for beginners who want to try wheel throwing for the first time, or to work on mastering the fundamentals.

Get guidance on the basics of centering clay on the wheel, pulling up the walls, and shaping. As a beginner, you will start by learning the process to make a basic cylinder shape, before moving onto more complex shapes and techniques if you come to multiple classes.

At the end of the class, you will have the option to have your piece(s) fired and glazed using one of our studio glazes, if you have made anything which you wish to keep. One of our studio technicians will do this for you and we will contact you when your pots are ready for collection!

If you are comfortable throwing around 3lbs of clay, or if you have a specific project that you want to work on, please contact us before booking this class so that we can ensure it can be tailored to your needs.

The session is two hours and has a maximum of two students.

Pottery Wheel Throwing! Beginners Ceramics Session

Students get a unique opportunity to visit Colin McCallum's railway arch studio in the super creative neighbourhood of Hackney, located in a street with a long history of artists. Colin studied Fine Art at Camberwell School of Art and has remained in East London for many years as well as living in Barcelona for 14 years.

Colin is an award winning artist who has shown his art all over the world and has many international collectors.

In this fun and informative 2 hour class, students will be introduced to Colin's art and he will discuss his techniques in detail. You will get a real insight into the life of a professional artist too!

The class is suitable for beginners and those who have tried painting before and want more guidance from a professional. Colin will provide a large array of acrylic and spray paints and begin with showing some examples of his methods on paper. Each student gets the chance to work on paper and finally will be given their own canvas to create the final work which they can take home (if the canvas is not dry they can return to collect at a later date).

A good selection of slips, underglazes and glazes

We use a range of clays – white and speckled buff throwing clays, White Earthstone hand building clay, buff clay, crank and terracotta.

A comprehensive selection of reference books with access to a printer and Wifi.

When you join the workshops you will have a space allocated on the shelf. We have a limited number of plastic storage boxes but please consider supplying your own to store your work in within your storage area.

In this home kit you will receive a set of beautiful handmade papers, as well as card, labels, envelopes, collage materials (for example book pages, magazine pages, music manuscript, pressed flowers, stickers etc) a folding tool, binding ring and other treats. Everything you need to get zine-making in the comfort of your own home. You will also receive a limited edition, handmade art zine which will feature your zine-making instructions.

The instructions will support you to experiment with two different types of folding techniques to create your zine. Themed wellbeing prompts will then guide you through writing and drawing activities to create your own zine about a positive memory or a meaningful time or place. You will be filling the pages with adventurous writing and mark-making and allowing your imagination to take the lead.

This kit is best suited for adults, although children can be taken through the activities with assistance from an adult. No experience necessary!
