Cosplay (コスプレ kosupure), a portmanteau of the words costume play, is a performance art in which participants called cosplayers wear costumes and fashion accessories to represent a specific character.[1] Cosplayers often interact to create a subculture, and a broader use of the term "cosplay" applies to any costumed role-playing in venues apart from the stage. Any entity that lends itself to dramatic interpretation may be taken up as a subject and it is not unusual to see genders switched. Favorite sources include anime, cartoons, comic books, manga, television series, and video games.

The rapid growth in the number of people cosplaying as a hobby since the 1990s has made the phenomenon a significant aspect of popular culture in Japan and some other parts of Asia and in the Western world. Cosplay events are common features of fan conventions and there are also dedicated conventions and local and international competitions, as well as social networks, websites and other forms of media centered on cosplay activities.

The term "cosplay" was coined in Japan in 1984. It was inspired by and grew out of the practice of fan costuming at science fiction conventions, beginning with Morojo's "futuristicostumes" created for the 1st World Science Fiction Convention in New York City in 1939.

An introduction into making your own superhero or fantasy cosplay or fancy dress costumes and props with simple materials and equipment that can be used at home. No machines or power tools necessary. 

You will be learning:

-Basic design and pattern cutting.
-Gluing and assembly.
-Shaping and smoothing.
-Painting and laminating
-Ageing.

You will also make a simple prop to take home with you.

An Introduction into making replica costumes and props for cosplay and fancy dress.

A 10 week course. One evening a week learning character design and anatomy and about materials we will be using on the course.

Building the basic shape of the character onto an armature with plastiline.

Sculpting or "blocking" out the basic character details and anatomy. (Bone and muscle structure, hair, clothing and Armour etc)

 Character details and starting on the smaller details. (Eyes, lids , skin, hair etc)

Refining the details and an introduction into texturing. (Skin, scales, armor, clothing etc)

Creating a professional looking "Finish" to your sculpture.

Fantasy Sculpting 

Stephen McClure has been working as a freelance supervising sculptor, model and prop maker in the TV and film industry and in various departments from creatures to costumes, prop making to art department since 1993. His portfolio includes work on films for directors such as Danny Boyle, Alfonso Cuarón, Martin Scorsese and Tim Burton. His filmography includes Oliver Stone’s Alexander, Sweeney Todd: The Demon Barber of Fleet Street, Elizabeth The Goldenage, Prince of Persia, Hugo, Ex Machina, Jupiter Ascending and Ridley Scott’s Alien Covenant.

Stephen has also worked on various television shows such as Sky television’s Critical, ANC’s Emerald City and numerous episodes of Doctor Who, including taking the role of lead sculptor and project supervisor on the build of the new Cybermen in 2013.

Most recently Stephen has been working in the special effects department of  Game of Throwns. 
Stephen teaches sculpture, molding, costume prop making, character design  and special make-up FX creation and application for the film and television industries.

Pottery Workshop

On this throwing workshop, you will learn a little about the properties of clay and the importance of wedging. You will also learn how to centre, open and pull up the walls of your pot. There will be a maximum of seven people on this throwing workshop and each person will have their own dedicated wheel for the entire length of the session. There will also be two teachers with a teacher/student ratio of 1 teacher to 3.5 students. Please note, this is a group class. If you are looking for 1 to 1 teaching (one teacher to one participant) or 1 to 2 (one teacher to two participants) then you may find that a private session works best for you.

You can keep your best pot to take home, after it has been fired and glazed for you.  Please note that the last 10 minutes of the class is dedicated to studio practice, which involves cleaning of your wheel and tools.

What happens to your pots after they have been thrown?
At the end of the workshop you will choose your best piece or pot to keep. Two days after the workshop, your pot will be turned (trimmed) on the wheel for you.  Your pot will then be put on a shelf to dry for several days. Once dry, it will be ready for it’s first bisque firing in the kiln. After the bisque fire, your pot will be glazed and once again put through the kiln, but this time for the final glaze firing.

As you can see, your wheel throwing  experience is only a small part of a much, much longer and very labour intensive process. Turning (trimming and shaping your pot on the wheel) and glazing are all part of the making process and just as important as throwing on the wheel.

When your work is ready for collection, usually two or three weeks after the class, you will be able to collect your pieces! Collection is from Sak Beh Pottery and the collection dates are listed on the Sak Beh Website. So please check the Sak Beh Website for your collection date by clicking the tab, collection of pots. We don’t send out emails as they tend to go to spam folders or are not read.

Due to limited shelf and storage space, pots or work that remain uncollected one month after notification will (sadly) be disposed of.

(If you wish to keep a second pot, there will be an extra charge of £8.)

We offer a complimentary self serve tea bar with a selection of snacks.


Intensive Wheel Throwing Workshop

The classes are run by artists with over 20 years experience who have an amazing passion for their art forms. The artists will inspire you to explore your creativity in a relaxed learning environment. These classes cover the basics as well as more advanced techniques – dive in at whatever level suits you!

For drop-ins you create a mosaic tile to take home. The studio shelves are full of treasure for you to use. One of the best stocked mosaic studios in London. The range is unbelievable.
You will be introduced to the fundamentals of mosaic which can allow you to progress onto further projects, e.g a mosaic art piece, plant pot, mirror frame, table top - we have all the bases for you to choose.

Our studio is set in a gated community garden which makes it a quiet and relaxing environment.

Neon Naked Life Drawing Class

You can make up to 3 pieces using these skills, which will then be bisque-fired, dipped in our beautiful stoneware glazes, and fired again. Most of our glaze choices are dinnerware safe. The results are stunning! You receive your posted creations within 4-6 weeks, imagine the magical moment when you open your box to reveal the results!

The vessels/pots can be for functional ware or try small sculptural work. You are welcome to come with your own ideas during the mindful 2.5 hours of making with the full support of an experienced ceramic tutor to help you realise your creative design ideas. No experience is necessary as the session is beginner-friendly as well for the more advanced participants.

The popular venue is our stunning Art4Space community arts centre, which is an inclusive, supportive, respectful, welcoming, safe space for everyone. Proceeds go towards our community art projects providing vulnerable individuals with mental health support in deprived areas in Lambeth, London.

For private bookings, we can also arrange to come to your venue. Please note it is £54 per person for 2-2.5-hour workshop, plus travel expenses. We are flexible with timing; day, evening or weekend, according to availability.

Hand building pottery - Pinch, coil and slab building

This workshop is about learning the use of traditional Japanese hand tools, the process of inking wood blocks, printing on different types of handmade paper and developing a new understanding of various techniques in woodcut art, all of which will enable you to make fine art prints to take away at the end of the session.

For the workshop everyone will be provided with:
5x traditional Japanese hand tools
1x Shina ply woodblock - blocks can be cut and printed on both sides
3x types of printmaking papers (including Japanese Hosho paper)
Water-based inks, pencils etc.
Pre-cut shapes and pattern blocks to use in compositions.
Tubes for taking prints away at the end of the session.

Introduction - Cups of tea, coffee and soft drinks followed by an intro from Alex on printmaking and his career.

Throughout the session, Alex will give an overview of this ancient art form (woodcut is the oldest print process) and has a culturally rich history in China, Japan, Mexico, Brazil and most recently in Germany with the Expressionists. Contemporary artists such as  Grayson Perry, Tom Hammick, Christiane Baumgartner, Eileen Cooper and Rebecca Salter continue to inspire and push the medium into new and exciting places.

Stage 1 - Alex will cover the use of hand tools to design, draw and cut woodblocks and explore the process of hand printing using traditional Japanese barens (circular discs wrapped in bamboo) and rollers on three types of paper.

Stage 2 - Delve a little deeper, with examples on how to use multiple blocks, reduction-cutting techniques and the importance of block registration to create more complex multi colour prints.

Stage 3 - This a perfect opportunity to make multiply prints through editions, ending the final part of the session by experimenting with your favourite design or playing with various colours.

Stage 4 - Everyone will be provided with cardboard tubes for their prints to travel safely home.

Learn Woodcut Printing With An Artist


This is a great introduction to pottery in a small class with lots of teacher support. There is a maximum of seven students to two teachers.  That’s 3.5 students to one teacher. If you are looking for one to one attention please consider a Private Class.

As an introduction to pottery, this class comprises of both throwing on the wheel and hand building. You will have your own dedicated wheel. We also offer beginner classes devoted solely to wheel throwing and beginner classes solely devoted to hand building. But if you just want to give everything a go in a relaxed and bright studio, then this is a perfect first step into pottery.

This is a fun class and you will be shown how to centre your clay on the wheel, open your pot and pull up the walls. You will also be shown how to make pots using hand building techniques involving the manipulation of clay, using the hand only. These techniques are pinching, coiling and slab building.

At the end of your class you can keep your best pot which will be fired twice and glazed for you in our lovely studio white glaze. Your pot will be ready for collection three weeks after the class and the collection dates will be listed on the Sak Beh Pottery website. We don’t send out emails as many end up in spam folders or are not seen. So please remember to check the website for your collection dates.

We offer a complimentary self serve tea bar with a selection of snacks.

Introduction to wheel throwing

This two-hour session is perfect for beginners who want to try wheel throwing for the first time, or to work on mastering the fundamentals.

Get guidance on the basics of centering clay on the wheel, pulling up the walls, and shaping. As a beginner, you will start by learning the process to make a basic cylinder shape, before moving onto more complex shapes and techniques if you come to multiple classes.

At the end of the class, you will have the option to have your piece(s) fired and glazed using one of our studio glazes, if you have made anything which you wish to keep. One of our studio technicians will do this for you and we will contact you when your pots are ready for collection!

If you are comfortable throwing around 3lbs of clay, or if you have a specific project that you want to work on, please contact us before booking this class so that we can ensure it can be tailored to your needs.

The session is two hours and has a maximum of two students.

Pottery Wheel Throwing! Beginners Ceramics Session

Students get a unique opportunity to visit Colin McCallum's railway arch studio in the super creative neighbourhood of Hackney, located in a street with a long history of artists. Colin studied Fine Art at Camberwell School of Art and has remained in East London for many years as well as living in Barcelona for 14 years.

Colin is an award winning artist who has shown his art all over the world and has many international collectors.

In this fun and informative 2 hour class, students will be introduced to Colin's art and he will discuss his techniques in detail. You will get a real insight into the life of a professional artist too!

The class is suitable for beginners and those who have tried painting before and want more guidance from a professional. Colin will provide a large array of acrylic and spray paints and begin with showing some examples of his methods on paper. Each student gets the chance to work on paper and finally will be given their own canvas to create the final work which they can take home (if the canvas is not dry they can return to collect at a later date).

This workshop is very hands on and is suitable for people who have attended our beginners workshops  or have had previous experience working with clay and have a knowledge of the basics.

At the workshop we have:
3 electric kilns of varying sizes

6 electric pottery wheels

A slab roller and a clay extruder

A large selection of plaster moulds and modelling tools

A good selection of slips, underglazes and glazes

We use a range of clays – white and speckled buff throwing clays, White Earthstone hand building clay, buff clay, crank and terracotta.

A comprehensive selection of reference books with access to a printer and Wifi.

When you join the workshops you will have a space allocated on the shelf. We have a limited number of plastic storage boxes but please consider supplying your own to store your work in within your storage area.

Bundles – these will expire as follows:

6 sessions - 3 months from the date of purchase
12, 24, 32, 36 - 17th July

You will also have access to our studio without a tutor:

There is an additional charge for materials and firings according to weight and size. These prices are subject to change, suppliers have increased prices 3 times over the past year and electricity costs will be increasing threefold in the near future.

There will be an additional charge for clay according to the weight of the pieces you make (fired and glazed). Payment will be taken after the first firing.
