Starter exercise - You will start with a range of exercise to familiarise yourself with the drawing instrument and the range of possibilities in terms of tone and mark-making that are possible. You will discover how lines differently spaced in cross hatching can enable large areas of light or dark within a drawing.

You will look at the work of Durer & Van Gogh to gain an appreciation of their technique and approach to this medium. The benefit of looking at the work of other artists can both inspire and inform your own understanding of the subject.

Main exercise - You will explore by touch and sight the characteristics of an organic subject. You will make a range of studies of your subject which illustrate in depth observation of that particular form.

You will be encouraged to use expressive lines and mark-making to describe this form. A traditional dip pen or quill will be used with black drawing ink. The width and flexibility of the nib can promote some strong examples of drawing.
