What happens in this class?

Walk (or skip!) beside me into the world of lettering. Let’s play and draw the shapes the proper grown ups call letters.

The workshop is designed for people who wish to explore, play and improve their hand lettering style. It is not a calligraphy class with hours of drills or for calligraphers wanting to brush up their already honed skills, it’s very much a taster class for people wanting to explore and have some fun with lettering.

In this workshop I’ll guide you through some modern day handwriting and calligraphic styles as well as looking at much…

FAQs
Do I need to be competent with lettering?
In short no, but to expand slightly, to be good at anything it's all down to practice and we all need to start somewhere. This isn't a workshop aimed at getting you fluent and up to expert standard in a style by the end of the day, I'm afraid that takes a bit longer. But if you arrive with enthusiasm and the willingness to play you'll have fun and be better at lettering than when you arrived!
Will I need to bring materials?
Of course feel free to bring any kind of paper or pens that you have. There will be a number of different pens for you to try and as you experience the different styles. There will also be different papers to work on and try out.
Will there be food?
We will have some home made cakes available. As these are home made I can't guarantee we'll have a variety of options for those with specific dietary requirements and I'm afraid we can not state that they will be free of any allergens like nuts or dairy etc. You will need to bring your own lunch as there isn't a shop or café near to the studio. There are supermarkets in Rothesay where you could grab something before coming to the workshop though.
I'm a calligrapher or have already done calligraphy classes, is this suitable.
Not really! This is a beginner's introduction to playing with lettering. It's designed to spark interest and enthusiasm which you will already have if you've done calligraphy. However, if you haven't done calligraphy but not for a while, this will reintroduce you to playing with tools and seeing what happens rather than sitting and doing lettering drills all day.
How will I get to the venue?
If you don't have a car, depending on the number of people travelling without a car we can help arrange a taxi to collect people and you'll just pay a share for the taxi. Just let me know if you need this help when you checkout.

I thoroughly enjoyed the Playful Lettering class with Chrissie. It was an interesting day with a variety of activities to help us to play around with writing styles and to help us to develop our own style. Highly recommended. 😊

This course explored the differences between serif and non-serif lettering and gave lots of opportunity for instruction and practice with different styles, encouraging participants to find a style that suits them. It does not touch on calligraphy or cursive writing. I loved playing with the sizing and formation of letters and came away with much more confidence in making my lettering more visually pleasing.
Janet Bentley - 12 October 2023
I came to the workshop with no experience of lettering of calligraphy and was soon eased into the world of lettering and experimentation. The emphasis is on finding your own style rather than writing in a set way. There was an opportunity to try out different types of pens that I found very valuable. There was also fabulous cake, but may just be an Isle of Bute special, also fabulous views of Bute and hen dodging available at no extra charge. Try it, go on you know you want to!!

Dear Chrissie, thanks so much for running the Playful Lettering workshop on 4th October. As you probably guessed I didn't get what I had hoped for from tge workshops I.e. how to align text in blank cards. Perhaps a "magic formula" doesn't exist or I would need a formal calligraphy course to learn it. However I certainly learnt a lot of other useful skills abs ir has given me confidence to experiment. The most useful thing I learnt was that I can practice 'italic' script using a 2B pencil, wonderful. My only other comment is that it would be nice to have taken away a finished piece of work but perhaps there wasn't time to do this in one day and two days practicing writing might be too tiring. As always the course was well organised and Chrissie was supportive and encouraging.
