Bimala RanabhatMade a terrarium a with the botanical boys a few years back and had an amazing experience. Took my partner to King’s Cross for the same experience but it just wasn’t the same at all. There was no real care and 1:1 feedback on the terrarium like there was when I first went. The workshop was just being taught from the front of the room, no going around to check if everybody was building their terrarium well, making sure it wasn’t overcrowded, checking that plants were planted deep enough etc and as a teacher, this was very evident, just expected a little more 1:1 feedback, doesn’t have to last long, less than a minute. My partners terrarium started moulding a few days after taking it home and was advised to bring it back to the workshop. They didn’t advise what they were going to do, had to chase it up after they didn’t contact us about it for a month, was then told it was ready to pick up (literally nothing else) one week later, was sent another email asking when we were going to pick it up because they needed the storage space (a little cheeky considering they had it for 1 month with no communication) when my partner went to pick it up, it was a completely different terrarium which would’ve been fine if initially they had advised that it needed to be rebuilt because of the moisture but they didn’t ask him for any input as to how he would’ve wanted it to look - he wouldn’t have been bothered about how it look but it’s nice to be asked, to have autonomy over something that you paid for. It’s a shame because I really enjoyed this when I did it before lockdown when the BB were still working in Hackney. Now that they’re bigger, the customer service and quality of workshop has gone down. It’s all about up selling wine from South Africa, telling an abstract story about a butterfly/how terrariums came to England and mentioning the awards/prizes they’ve won. Such a shame.

Jackthis was a very underwhelming experience. for what you pay and the materials you receive its genuinely not worth it- i would have spent my money wiser by getting the materials myself. the group leader couldn't be bothered half the time and wasn't entertaining. during the mini quizzes, all attention was focussed on the table at the front as they were closest, which i thought was rather unfair considering we have all paid the same amount.

LauraI booked the slim cork terrarium workshop for my partners birthday with a couple more friends. The space was neat, tidy and calming. The layout was also good. The hosts were friendly and helpful, offering recommendations on drinks as well. Michael led our session. He was very charismatic and knowledgeable and added great flare to the session. The terrariums look great and feel like good value for money. Would recommend to anyone but especially to people who are looking to add something quirky and special to their plant collection. The other items to buy in the shop were also decent value with a variety of plants, pots, terrarium figurines and other small items.

The instruction was clear, with just the right amount of direction, and some education thrown in. It was so great to learn about the history of Terrariums, understand why each step has to take place when building your own little ecosystem and doing the fun interactive quiz at the end. Our teacher/workshop leader ginger Mike was very funny and definitely helped us all loosen up during the session and got us comfortable learning and chatting to our neighbours too. His song choices throughout the session were great too!

undefinedI was watching the BBC interiors programme with Alan Carr where contestants had to make over a shop. And one week was a shop that sold Terrarium's. Before this I had never heard of them. I received a gift voucher for the Botanical Boys for my birthday and went along to a workshop. I was very impressed by the knowledge of the guy who lead the workshop and also impressed myself by building my own Terrarium. It was a great experience and I would definitely recommend anyone to attend a workshop.

undefinedWe had a brilliant time. I booked it for a birthday present and a group of 4 of us went. It was a 2 hour workshop. At the end I left feeling like I’d learnt something new and that it was a really enjoyable. Quite often you feel that ‘experiences’ can be really expensive with no substance and a bit of a waste of time but not in this case. I also really liked that it was the sort of thing that had universal appeal and could enjoy and get a lot out of it. I would not hesitate in recommending this to others.

I've knocked off a star just because I found that it was a bit cramped I was practically leaning on the person behind me, there wasn't much space - a different table layout would help this or not having quite so many people in the class. Would highly recommend as a gift or just something to do on a Sunday afternoon :)

MatthewA nice workshop, with good backround music and entertaining commentary. However it felt quitw a bit rushed: the time allocated for the terrarium is a too short to do it in comfort. Still doable, but it was unanimous for our group of four that one more hour would be much better. Alternatively, some help ahead of time would be benificial, so we could plan better. The instructor was friendly and accommodating, however I expected them to be mode decisive when asked to help with design (and it would definitely save time). There was clearly lack of convenient tools such as a plastic hose with a funnel, terrarium scissors, and a telescopic spoon/shovel. After comparing with another workshop where we've built a pair of terrariums, I'd say Botanical Boys has a massive room for improvement w/o too much effort.

Conor O KeeffeThe Botanical Boys workshop was really good, slightly disappointed it was in the Samsung building, I would have preferred a more green and lush natural environment, rather than surrounded by gizmos and gadgets. That said, it was really insightful and fun and we learned a lot. The experience was really fast paced, which is fun for some but I struggled sometimes to slow down and really enjoy what I was doing, as I wanted to take time to plan out where I would put each plant. Slight shame that there were also only two types of plants available to put in the terrarium as well. If I had known, I would have brought and extra cactus or something. I would definitely recommend it, but upon reflection the price is steep for what is basically two small plants in a glass jar (even if there is soil, charcoal etc included).

Ariane CurtisNot my first time with Botanical Brothers. It became a little bit more commercial, in my view. The large wreath, on all accounts, was not large. I did another workshop at a different place with a large wreath and this one was half of the other one. Lastly, Prosecco was an additional benefit, and not that I’d ever drink more than a glass, but now it’s chargeable. I mean, the bottle costs £8 in any supermarket, and the masterclass costs £95. Perhaps if one drinks 1/4 of an £8 bottle, it won’t bankrupt the store. Still like their terrariums, their stores, but this was the last time for the wreath.

Nice lesson in history of terrariums included as well as a good explanation of how to assemble and care for the terrarium. Would not hesitate to recommend the workshop to others!

They were a good size and we had loads of fun putting them together. Michael was really great throughout the workshop, telling us the history of the terrariums in a very fun way. We left with loads of interesting facts and information about the why of every material/plant we used in our terrariums and instructions about how to look after them once at home. We really enjoyed it and would 100% recommend it.

Jessica Gay MartinezI was so looking forward to this masterclass but I was disappointed. The workshop leader treated the session as if it was his personal performance space and it was misguided throughout. Prosecco or a soft drink is included in the Masterclass- odd to me that the workshop leader is drinking whilst he’s leading it? There was so much talk and showboating that there was no opportunity to talk with friends/family and have a lovely experience learning and building the terrariums. Alongside a rambling, clunky history of the terrarium (that took far too long), there were a random amount of music changes that he did on his phone to accompany his chat. There were many random sexual innuendos (the worst one being: advising us all that we should leave the lids off the terrariums for 2 days once we got them home - and then swiftly picking on two participants, a mother and daughter, and said if they didn’t do this it would result in the terrariums smelling and their friends and family saying “X and X have two very smelly holes.”) This example is one of quite a few. It was unprofessional and it didn’t feel like I was there to learn about terrariums, it felt like I was there to watch a show all about the leader. So odd and absolutely not reading the room. On a side note, we paid for the Eden Domes (which include some extra decorative stones and two extra plant choices.) There weren’t enough decorative stones for our party to each have one - and- we were told there was a problem with their supplier so the extra plants that fitted into the taller jars, wouldn’t fit into ours so we couldn’t use them. Deeply disappointing, especially considering that it was an upgrade option. There was no mention of these issues prior to the workshop/online and was suddenly talked about in the last 20 minutes or so of the workshop. Whilst we were creating them. We were taken to the shop afterwards and advised that we could get another stone from there and one plant of our choice that still won’t fit in the dome (and we could have just been given one at the workshop). I left having created a nice terrarium but it could have been so much nicer if we weren’t rushed from stage-to-stage of building it and instead of the mindless chat, we received a great amount of input along the way in a less sarcastic atmosphere.

The teacher (Darren -if i recall correctly) was lovely, knowledgeable and very helpful), the class was busy (15 people) but there was enough space and materials for everyone to enjoy the afternoon....we were also treated to a lovely glass of bubbly....what else can you ask? I would definitely recommend!

The Botanical Boys are doing great things with these classes, the content included and the atmosphere of take part in them . Nicholas Heriot HillI really enjoyed the person leading the class and he made us feel comfortable. However, I was quite disappointed with the class. I thought I was getting to make a nice terrarium, instead we had a history lesson for the first 30/40minutes of the class. When we finally got to make the terrarium, I had a good time finding out about the layers needed and getting my hands dirty. When it was time to put the plants in, we somehow only had five minutes to do it. This is supposed to be the most exciting and creative moment of the whole class and we had five minutes. I had to rush my terrarium and shove a few plants in (may I say the most basic and cheapest plants you can find, a bit cheeky for a 70 pounds class) and we were pressured to finish quickly, and for what? To make a social media video for their instagram page. I'm sorry this is harsh but I was not happy and ended up purchasing some extra plants and redoing my terrarium myself. I think whoever organises these classes need to rethink about what their clients are paying for.

Price too high given the limitation on plants and terranium ingredients. etc. Such a shame as has the potential of being a very enjoyable class.

NicolaWhat a great way to spend a Sunday afternoon! It was boiling hot, but our fabulous host Michael plied us with water (& Prosecco!) throughout the session. Michael was the perfect host – genial, amusing and informed. We learnt about the history of terrariums, which included the opium wars and espionage. The BBs provide all the materials you need to make your own terrarium but it’s up to you how you want the finished product to look. The others who participated were lovely and and we had all bonded by the end of our session. If you’re thinking about doing this course just get on with it and book it you won’t be disappointed! The class itself was extremely enjoyable, we learned all about the history and care of the terrariums, with some prosecco for extra enjoyment! We were able to choose from different plants including Ginseng trees and other upgrade plants to make our perfect Terrarium and we were extremely pleased with the beautiful finished product! Would very much recommend this class to anyone!

Amy HarveyEnd product is looking good, although care instructions are a bit light and picture of what 'moisture' should look like could help. All the materials were provided and extra figurines were a nice touch. However we could not wait to get our hands dirty, yet the first half of the session was a mostly one-way talk about the brand and some history of terrariums. I believe the same info could have been shared while also starting to build the terrarium. The practical part of the session felt rushed, not allowing time for mistakes. The trainer would have had the time to go check one by one the terrariums and advise each individually on critical points (e.g. over filling, choice of plants etc). I would only advise the workshop for people who have already built terrariums and are only looking for an opportunity to practice. It is convenient that all materials are sourced. The talk did not conduct to a nice atmosphere, felt more like an awkward classroom.

MelanieI don't know what I was expecting but it exceeded my expectations. The atmosphere in the space we were sat in was really nice and the presentation was lovely. Cameron 'the moss man' gave an insightful history lesson and we got to create these treasures that we can hold onto for years to come. The terrariums we made were ones I would want to buy, so being able to hand make them ourselves is something really special.

GamzeThe workshop was amazing, Cameron ( I think his name was) was super down to earth (pardon the pun) and made something a little bit nerdy come across as interesting and fun! We were plied with Prosecco throughout and shown how to properly make a terrarium and given the option to upgrade your plants (buy slightly bigger or different ones) aswell as having lots of options already included. I was bought the workshop as a gift and was a little worried because I like plants but I usually find learning really boring. But it was so fun, and now I have two beautiful terrariums in my flat (my partner came along too) and a little more knowledge which is always helpful. The guys teaching the class had a casual approach, were super engaging and really easy to get on with. I would 100% do it again or purchase it for someone else as a gift.

Oliver NicholasThis was a great class! As you walk in, the area in the back of the shop is set up to host about 10-12 people. Everything is pre-laid out for you (ie moss, soil, tools, aprons etc). You just have to listen and take instruction from Michael. Michael was a great teacher; funny, informative and very helpful! The time flew by and at the end of it you've got a lovely Terrarium with a box to take it home :) Would highly recommend this course!

My only advice would be to perhaps take a bag with you to bring your terrarium home as the paper bags provided don't look strong enough if going home by train.

AlicePartner bought this for me as a present. Was great fun, really interactive, well explained, good choice of jars and plants, and I learnt a lot about gardening generally. I found it a relaxed and welcoming environment. The only criticism is that my partner had upgraded me but the instructor was not aware of this. If my partner hadn't told me she'd upgraded me, I would not have known to flag this and would have been given the same sized jar and plants as others who had not been upgraded.

I upgraded to the smaller egg vessel for an extra £30 and seemed to use less materials as the base is so much smaller than the standard class jar size - but then still charged an extra £5 for an asparagus fern to put in istead. But otherwise a good class. Thak you.

Fredi CI have had prior knowledge of terrariums but there were questions unanswered, some used activated charcoal, others said not to, then some added isopods to the mix. The class was informative but dwelled too much on the origin, it was fun though and the participants at my table were friendly. The Fittonias' were a great fit for this but some of the other upgrade plants were too big to fit in the regular terrarium provided, hence the chance to upgrade. Perhaps you would consider having other varieties of plants that would fit. All in all a great way to spend a few hours, gaining insight into this.

Either way, I thoroughly enjoyed the session and wondered if you did a more advanced course.
Rachna KanwarThe class itself was great, however after cards when walking around due to rain my friends bag split and terrarium crashed to the ground. Then later on when in a public toilet I hung my bag on a hook, the bag tapped the back of the door and the glass broke. Would be beneficial if you said to people that they are very fragile and to take extra care, especially when walking round London. So a great class but unfortunately we both had nothing to show for it.

JHBoth my partner and I loved the experience, our two terrariums sit happily in our bookcase. Michael has amazing horticultural knowledge and made the whole experience fun and informative. Don’t let the covid restrictions put you off booking. Temperature checks and hand sanitiser was done, all tools are sterilised, alongside mask wearing during the experience. But once you get your hands stuck in you don’t notice that mask feeling.

JonnyThe workshop itself was good. The trainer had a great energy and the experience was fun. However, it was 3 of us doing the course, and a couple of weeks after we took at home the terrariums we made at the workshop, all the plants had died and there was mould. All 3 of us followed the exact guidelines and kept the terrariums as suggested but weirdly they all died at the same time. Of course when dealing with plants there might be occasions where the plants don't survive but in this occasion is hard to believe it was a coincidence for all 3 of us.

IndiaFun bday gift activity for a friend. Nice planty/workshopy area n people. Was good to get a drink, terrarium history intro, info about terrariums eg the layers needed, care, biology etc. Liked that they "hid" dinosuars around the room that you can add to your terrarium. The plants included (fittonias) were nice but would have been better to have another variety included in the price instead of £5 upgrade choice ie as standard get maybe 2 fittonias in diff colours n a diff plant. Came home with a decent piece thats still alive.

The end result was fantastic! Perfect for a casual outing or even a special event (we went for my friend’s birthday treat...safe to say she thoroughly enjoyed it!). Highly recommend if you’re looking for something that’s a bit different!

EmmaWhat a great way to spend a couple of hours! Firstly, the space used was fantastic. The workshop was set out well, making it easy to feel comfortable and safe within social distancing guidelines. The guys presenting were brilliant! From the really interesting history around terrarium lesson and the ‘how to build the terrarium’ guide, the guys were both engaging and attentive. The glass of bubbles was a lovely touch and we had a really enjoyable time creating our little gardens. I would definitely recommend the workshop and will be booking again for birthdays. NilmaMy partner and I attended a Terrarium Class a few weeks ago after getting the experience for my partners birthday. We were made to wait for the experience due to COVID-19 but it was worth it. Straight from the start we were made to feel welcome and it was fascinating to learn about the history of terrariums, as well as how Botanical Boys got to where they are today. To date, our terrariums look amazing and we hope to get many months out of them. We also got some great tips for looking after plants too, and we’ve already started to see the benefits from some advice! An experience I would definitely recommend to anyone who has A green thumb, or wants to learn more about plants, and it would make a great gift for someone! We will definitely be back! :)

My only suggestions would be: The trainer could speak a bit louder since in the airy room, with Air con, and masks on, it was hard to hear him (and/or mix up where he stands in the room, though I realise easier for everyone to face the front) I'm not sure the stones /rocks etc were spread out across all tables at the start - there were none on our table so seemed like we didn't know that opportunity was on its way! I had a great time and am really happy with my terrarium, thanks!

MysteryThe class was good, I enjoyed making the terrarium and it is still alive! I wasn't so keen on the class space though as it was taught in the Samsung building, on a open floor in a public area, where there was lots of hustle and bustle and noises of other things going on. Our host had a microphone, so hearing him wasn't a problem, it just wasn't as tranquil as I would have liked and seemed an odd setting for something so mindful. The theme for the class was mindfulness and connecting to nature but the setting was like being in the middle of a shopping centre. I did still enjoy the activity though.

RyanMy boyfriend and I attended the SamsungKK session on 2 November 2019 (13:00-15:00). We weren’t sure what to expect, having been recommended by a colleague, but overall had a very enjoyable time. The session lead was friendly and approachable, and provided an interesting history lesson on the evolution of the terrarium. Champagne and water were also provided, which was a nice touch. The lesson itself was well instructed and very hands-on, with great scope for creative freedom. We were given clear instructions on how to ensure garden longevity and there was a wide variety and ample supply of materials on offer. The resulting terrariums were generally excellent across the board and most seemed to really embrace the experience. However, there were a few elements that detracted from the overall experience which The Botanical Boys may wish to address for future sessions. Predominantly, we found the venue to be very loud (open to the public) and considering terrarium-making is pitched as a relaxing and mindful experience, this was quite off-putting and felt more like a live event than a closed session. Matters were compounded by the fact the sound system was hit and miss (even switching off at one point) and at times it could be difficult to hear all instructions. The session leader also hinted that they do smaller lessons (20 people was quite a lot) where they serve tea, and it was a shame this refreshment wasn’t on offer.

Along with taking us through how to make the terrariums, he talked us through the history of how terrariums came to be and their role in international trade. It’s was a great mix of independent production and applied assistance meaning you felt the result was something you had created. Advice was platinum, but not forced. I would recommend this to anyone with an interest in greenery or plants. Something to do as a group or a couple. I would not have known about this if it were not for Obby. Top stuff!!!

SophieWhat a lovely class. The Botanical Boys are living out their dream, caring for plants, creating beautiful terrariums and spreading the love. The location was stunning: a tower full to the brim with green life. I'm really pleased with my terrarium. There was tons of choice when it came to things like stones, gravel and decoration, and the plants themselves were healthy and pretty. The green tea on arrival and the Prosecco was a nice touch. I left feeling utterly soothed and pleased with myself by the time I left with my terrarium, and it's doing really well at home. There's plenty of aftercare info available from The Botanical Boys so I'm not worried if anything goes wrong with it; I'll be able to put it right. I wouldn't hesitate to recommend the workshop to anybody, whether they're green fingered or not.

OliverBotanical Boys. From the moment we walked in the guys were extremely welcoming. We booked the master class, 2 hour session. We had a brief history of how terrariums started which was extremely interesting. With prosecco in one hand and mud in the other, it wasn't your average Saturday but connected us with nature and gardening on a small scale. I can't recommend this enough, i just want to keep making them.

ChristinaThe class was excellent. The guys who run it are really nice, funny, and know their stuff. Everyone in the class made a great Terrarium and we were allowed to take them home - plus there was prosecco! The only comment I would have for the botanical boys is that they kept showing us weird things they had been given that we could put in our Terrarium, like toy dinosaurs and cocktail flare sticks - maybe reel this in a bit and just let people enjoy the natural aspect of it a bit more. This is a small qualm though, because the class was incredible and I would highly recommend it.

LexyI would highly recommend this course. Darren is fab and see his wonderful work shop in dalston is something out of a movie. With terraniums and plants, you name it growing here there and everywhere in his living room. We went on a friday evening with limited previous knowledge of the plant world and have opened up a door to a fabulous area of wildlife which we wish to explore in more depth. Having had our quick but comprehensive history of the terrabijms we were into the making. With plenty of inspiration around we started to create our eco systems. I really liked how the designs were freeform - it was good to create something unique, rather than follow a template, so I felt like I truly created something for myself.

I learned so much about terrariums and even made my own to take home that I feel oonfident I can take care of! We were given red bush tea and prosecco during the class too. This is great idea for a gift to someone as it's an experience that can be shared and you get to take something home. I will definitely do one of their other classes!

NadiaGreat workshop! So much fun, ended up with a fab terrarium to take home and learned a lot too. We've tried other workshops were everything is very 'measured' - it says's one glass of prosecco, so you get one glass, class finishing on the exact time. But here class overran by 45 minutes because everyone were having so much fun and wanted to take photos etc in the end, everyone got several fill ups on prosecco, no limit on how many plants or items you wanted in your terrarium. Ben and Darren knows a lot about plants, have a lovely home/studio and created a really friendly and relaxed atmosphere. Would highly recommend the Botanical Boys to anyone who wants to try something new!

I would have liked things to kick off a bit more quickly, though, with less of an introduction of the history of the workshop/brand, and also had a bit more conversation at the end about other techniques for making terrariums/materials and ideas for doing them at home.

KarenWhat a fantastic way to spend a few hours. The Botanical Boys were excellent hosts welcoming us into their home. Some people may feel uncomfortable with this but for us this made the experience more personal and relaxed . Being in a small group meant that there was great opportunity for interaction between the boys and guests. It was educational, fun and very therapeutic and best of all we came away with our own terrarium creations. No previous experience or creative talent required just go with the flow. This was booked as a birthday surprise. I’m definitely going again with my friends as my enthusing has been contagious. I highly recommend the Botanical Boys experience.

We had an incredible time with the Botanical Boys, Darren and Ben, and cannot recommend their class enough. Being welcomed into their lovely home full of terrarium inspiration, my friends and I had a great time and definitely intend to take another class. Darren was a great instructor who is obviously very knowledgable and incredibly patient while Ben did a great job of making us feel welcome and topping up our prosecco while taking lovely photos of the whole evening. CatherineI can't recommend this class enough. I'm a big obby fan and I have been to some great classes, but this has by far been my favourite experience. My sister and I were lucky enough to be the only ones in our session, and Darren and Ben made us feel so welcome in their studio. Darren's excellent reaching gave us the perfect amount of knowledge to confidently build a really unique terrarium each. There was a huge variety of materials for us to work with and we were told all about the fascinating history of the art of terrarium making. The prosecco was also a wonderful touch! The Eco-system jar we came away with was absolutely beautiful, I've already received so many compliments on it. Will definitely be creating some more! Thank you Botanical Boys!
