FAQ's
How much experience do I need?
You can be a complete beginner, as within the course, I explain what clay is; how it behaves; the different types of clay; different firing temperatures and how to match clays with glazes based on the functionality of the piece you are making. I also go through every step in the making process in detail giving you useful tips about how to make the perfect crack free piece of pottery. You will gain knowledge accumulated from my 30+ years experience. This course is also suitable to be taken by a small group of friends or family members wishing to make something together they can be proud of. The benefit of this, is that the materials and tools can be shared, so reducing the cost (i.e a bag of clay and glaze can be shared amongst several people).
Do I have to have access to an electric kiln?
If you wish to make a ceramic leaf platter that is suitable for everyday dining use, then yes, you will need to fire it in a pottery kiln. However, if you are doing this course with children (I suggest adult supervision), you could use air drying clay instead of pottery clay and then paint the platter with acrylic paints and varnish after it the leaf platter has air dried. Please note however, this will mean the piece is still brittle (so only suitable as an ornament) and you will not be able to use it to eat food from.
Please can I see the materials and tools list in advance so I can get an idea of the extra costs involved?
Yes, if you would like to email me at studio@sonyaceramicart.com I can send you the complete list in advance of you paying for the course. That way you can plan ahead and see how many materials or tools you may need to purchase. Some people are able to borrow tools from friends or use some household items instead of purchasing pottery specific items. You will however have to buy the clay (which is approximately £10 per 12.5kg bag and the glaze and oxide (which are approximately £10). There may also be delivery charges for these items.
