Japanese mending...

Boro is very close to Sashiko, both use white thread on indigo and both are mending techniques but boro meaning “rags” or “tattered cloth,” refers to textiles that have been patched many times, so giving a far less structured effect. This sturdy method makes both Boro and Sashiko perfect for mending denim.

Come join us on the 3rd Monday and Saturday of the month for our Monthly Mending sessions, introducing you to the beautiful techniques of Japanese Mending wherever you are in the world!

Our workshops are inclusive and suitable for complete beginners. 

You will be given an introduction in to the traditional Japanese method of mending- using Boro Stitching, you can use fabrics as patches or embroider directly on to your clothing to fix any holes and create beautiful traditional designs.

This will be a hand sewing class, so no need to be a pro on the sewing machine! Which means you will be able to learn the techniques and continue to fix your clothing in the comfort of your own home!

You will leave the workshop feeling inspired to continue fixing and rejuvenating all of your favourite pieces that need a bit of TLC or even if you just want to customise your jeans to make them a bit more exciting. 

At the end of the workshop we will also show you how to sew your lovely patches on to an item of clothing - so feel free to bring one of your much loved pieces along that needs repairing.

Boro Japanese Mending Kit

In this kit you have all the tools you need to learn the basics of the traditional Japanese mending technique Boro- to repair and revive your much loved pieces.

Japanese mending - Sashiko

Sashiko means "little stabs" in Japanese or "little pierce" and is a form of decorative reinforcement stitching that started out of practical need during the Edo era (1615-1868) in Japan. Traditionally used to reinforce points of wear or to repair worn places or tears with patches, making the piece ultimately stronger and warmer.

You will learn the technique of sashiko using 3 different designs drawn out for you to follow.
Along with fabric to test out satin stitch mending

In this Subscription Kit you have all the tools you need to learn 4 types of mending techniques

RESTORATION LONDON is an independent organisation that focuses on sustainability within the clothing industry.
Our focus is on reusing, recycling and upcycling garments.
We hold workshops around London, encouraging participants to mend their favourite items of clothing instead of disposing them into landfill.
Our workshops aim to introduce ways of mending clothing through various textile methods in order to fix, deconstruct or customise to revive much loved pieces - offering a 10% discount to those bringing in an item of clothing to fix or use as fabric.
We want to inspire people to learn new, invaluable skills and reconnect with textile techniques. We want to encourage creativity and minimise the negative social and environmental effects of fast fashion, together.
We also host workshops for special events such as baby showers or hen parties.
All of our workshops and parties come with free tea, coffee and cake!

Founder Hannah Porter graduated from the Royal College of Art in 2015 and since worked in the fashion and textiles industry for established brands before starting her own company.
Trained in knitwear, Hannah was awarded a traineeship by The British Fashion Council to work in industry for a year as part of their graduate scheme straight after graduating. It was during this time that she really gained an insight into the world of fashion and the amount of work that goes into collections, from all involved.
Showcasing collections at least four times a year at LFW, was an eye-opener to see how "disposable" people were treating these garments and their workers. She knew she wanted to do something about it.
Hannah then started thinking about ways of redesigning with a purpose in mind to reuse the materials and regenerate these pieces through skilled textile methods to contribute towards a zero waste economy which lead to RESTORATION LONDON.
Hannah wants to introduce to others the skills and knowledge she learnt during her studies in order to help save our planet!
