Anna-Louise Graduated from the Royal College of Art in 2003 having received first class honours from Central Saint Martins. She is often regarded as a reportage artist, for her work is generally painted on location in ink on paper. These studies are then used a  reference material and scaled up into large oil on canvas paintings like this piece which was painted in 2019 as part of her solo exhibition at Chelsea Waterside Artspace entitles Transatlantic Paintings; London & New York. This painting is of Mumui, a baby Orangutan  who was being cared for at the Orangutan Foundation in Indonesia ready for release back into an area of protected forest. Harriet originally painted him to raise money for conservation charities.

Painted from a photograph taken by my husband on our wedding day in South Africa. Halfie the giraffe is so-named having lost his right ear in a fight for his beloved. For me, Halfie represents the belief that it truly is possible for non-artists like me to create Masterpeace's that represent beauty in their own right, through the stories they tell, and the mindful experience that produces them.

When viewing my paintings i prefer the individual to engage on a personal level. I strongly believe that all good art should create some sort of reaction wether that be positive, reflective or responsive or a plethora of other emotions affecting the senses. The essence of creating something different, unique in contrast to a world where mass production and consumers have overtaken craftsmanship and the essence of individuality. My work is always about connection- connecting with the present, past, a memory or an experience and it is highly personal. How I relate to it and how it contributes to my wellbeing is unique to each piece. I can give descriptions and hints as to when and what each piece is about for me personally but also i would wish that the viewer could engage, absorb and relate and find something which is personal to them.

Lara has taken particular interest in researching the idea of impression through concept, composition and colour. Creating a painting that is clearly thought out, taking decisions on representation and enhancing the best and most interesting way to reflect the subject matter is key to Lara's own practice. It is through experimentation of all these aspects that Lara can push her work to learn from it. " this is what I love about painting, the more I learn the more I realise it's never ending and this is exciting.

This piece was drawn in the Musée du Louvre while I was an Art History student at the Sorbonne. Living day to day in the noisy, busy cramped city that is Paris, I found a modicum of calm in the quiet, white open pace of the Louvre Sculpture court. This drawing is the result of many hours of calm reflection and observation.
