FOUR WEEKS COURSE
In the beginners, introductory classes, we will explore mark making, composition, shapes, texture, colour, values and how to start a painting,  using various tools and mediums on paper. 

Each weekly class will be 2.5 hours long and starts on the first week of the month. 

WEEK 1  (first week of the month)
We will focus on intuitive mark-making, using 'word prompts' and expressing ourselves using colour. We will make a single page painting with taped off sections. 
These mini paintings can be used for larger paintings or hung as an 'all in one' painting.

WEEK 2 (Second week of the month)
Abstraction of a rural scene reference photo. Understand how to create a focal point and area of interest. How to simplify the picture, how to choose colours, how to start and finish.

WEEK 3
Create a dynamic tonal abstract painting with 1 other colour. This is layering up all sorts of media, scraping, scratching in, adds depth to the tonal painting. 

WEEK 4 
Still Life with collage, inks and other media using 'blind drawing' as a start. (or drawing with a less dominant hand) This one is great fun.

**What is Abstraction?**
Abstraction finds its roots in ‘intuition’ and ‘freedom’. It is the capability of the artist to use their imagination to look beyond what we can physically see and translate intangible emotions onto the canvas. This may be through colour, shapes, texture, tonal value (light and dark) and mark making (line and form). Abstraction can be represented as a painting, drawing or sculpture. 

There are NO rules in abstract painting but, to achieve a successful painting, we must still consider the 6 key elements when creating art; colour, shape, form, texture, line, and value. 

There are many types of abstract painting and many ways of starting an abstract painting. In, Jump into Abstract Painting, we will delve into the basics so that you will have a good understanding of the mediums that we will use today and a way to start your painting. 


Following on from Class 1 in the first week of the month, we will explore different ways of starting off an abstract painting. 

**Intuition & Finding your Personal Voice**

We will start to notice and  identify some of the intuitive choices we make and how we can find what sorts of marks and mediums we enjoy the most. 

Margie will show you how to get started and guide you through the process of discovery and how to get started with your first abstract painting.

1.	Your first abstract paintings, to frame & hang on your wall. 
2.	A better understanding of intuitive and expressive painting. Also a better understanding of the materials that are used in mixed media
3.	A clear set of notes on what we did during the class so you can explore this type of painting further. 
4.	Materials list so that you can purchase materials to use at home.

Jump Into Abstract Painting Course - 4 Weeks

Hampton Court Studio lies between two rivers in East Molesey. The studio is an easy seven minute walk from Hampton Court Station and 2 minute walk from Bus 411 stop. 
Margie Haslewood opened her studio in 2020 and looks forward to greeting you at her studio.
The studio holds workshops, monthly classes or "one on one" individual classes and for group events. 
Margie has been painting for 20+ years and has studied various techniques in different media. 
If the weather is good, we try to venture outdoors for a Plein air experience.
