Explore making collages in this two-hour workshop with artist Cathy Van Hear. In this playful and experimentally focussed workshop, we will explore making our own collage materials, working from reference images, making figurative and abstract collages, and take a look at some inspiring collage artists. 

Cathy will guide you through making and selecting papers to work with, creating interesting effects by cutting, tearing, and crumpling the materials, how to work from reference imagery, and how to create playful and pleasing compositions through collaging. We will also look at how we can use our offcuts to create abstract compositions, producing serendipitous and colourful mini artworks and reducing our waste!

Collage Workshop - All Levels

Enjoy a crafty two hours and make a playful collage. Explore collaging from reference images and how to collect and make your own collage materials. 

Join this playful drawing workshop to explore how line drawing from observation and reference images can liven up your sketchbooks and give you a sense of freedom in your drawing. 

So many people like the idea of sitting down to draw but don’t know where to start or think that they’re not good enough, this workshop is here to help you lose the fear of the blank page and get drawing! 

We will do a series of drawing exercises aimed at freeing up your perception of a ‘finished’ picture and explore shape, line, colour and composition. Cathy will guide you through using different drawing mediums and adding colour and detail to your drawings. 

This workshop is suitable for complete beginners and more seasoned creatives who are looking to mix up their approach or get back into the drawing groove after some time out. Please check the ‘You Will Need’ section for the materials you will need to take part!


Line Drawing - all levels

Explore continuous line drawing to liven up your sketchbook page and have some creative fun! 

Join this intro to crochet workshop to make a fun stripey sample and learn techniques that you can use in future projects! 

We will cover the basics of crochet; how to hold your yarn and hook, foundation chains, and learn double crochet stitch and treble crochet stitch to make a fun stripey sample. This workshop will give you the skills and confidence to go on to make larger projects like scarves, homewares and jumpers! 

This class is suitable for complete beginners or anyone who has done some crochet before and would like a refresher of the foundational skills. Please check the ‘You Will Need’ section for the materials you will need to take part!

Learn the basics of crochet and make a fun stripey sample! 

Join this intro to crochet workshop to make a multi-coloured granny square! 

We will cover the basics of crochet; how to hold your yarn and hook, foundation circle, the granny stitch pattern, how to change colour, and how to secure your work. This workshop will give you the skills and confidence to go on to make larger projects like scarves, blankets and jumpers!

Community artist, teacher, and maker Cathy Van Hear has 5 years of experience teaching art and craft courses and workshops. Her focus on playfulness and process in her own art practice translates to an emphasis on giving students the techniques and tools to explore their own creativity both during and after one of her workshops in a playful and explorative way. 

Her workshops are based on the principle that making and creating is good for us, and that, through learning new art and craft techniques we can go on to explore our creativity and include it in our lives more, helping us to find little moments of creative joy in our regular lives. Most workshops are suitable for beginners or improvers, as well as more seasoned creatives looking to mix up their approaches and rediscover a bit of creative play.
