This is a private, in-person class for stressed teenagers.

'Calming', 'soothing', 'therapeutic'. Just a few of the words used to describe the effect string art has on first time participants in this little-known craft.

The craft of string art involves sewing on card, creating geometric designs. You can make cards to give to family and friends, or pieces of art that can be framed and displayed for all to see.

Personalised classes are facilitated by London-based, DBS-checked teacher, Laurie O'Garro, who has been teaching string art to children and young people since 2014. She has led sessions nationally at Chelsea Theatre, the Ideal Home Exhibition and Imperial College as well as internationally, in the United Arab Emirates and Sweden.

With 30 years' teaching experience, Laurie has a calm, relaxed manner when working with young people. She is infinitely patient and has the knack of putting beginner string artists at ease.

With so many demands on teenagers - from school work - and social media vying for their attention, string art (or any creative pursuit, for that matter) is the perfect way to 'unplug', switch off, and wind down.   

Crafting is proven to:

String art gives learners and returners a few hours of much-needed downtime.

And what's great about string art is that it's just so different from what most teenagers have seen, and it's great if you have a teenager who enjoys crafting, or is looking for a new hobby. A string art session with Laurie is the perfect way to broaden their creative repertoire.

Private string art classes can be done in the comfort of your own home or in a cosy cafe and can be anything from one hour to three hours long. However long you or your son or daughter spend doing string art, you are guaranteed to leave the session feeling calm and immensely proud of your creation.

Laurie O'Garro is a teacher, with thirty years' experience working with children, teenagers and adults.   

Since 2014, Laurie has specialised in a craft called 'string art'. From symbols to intricate geometric shapes, Christmas trees and sugar skulls, Laurie encourages her students to produce mounted pieces and greetings cards. Her mission is to bring crafting to a new generation while building self-confidence, supporting their wellbeing and enhancing their skills. Her vision is to support people to uncover their creativity and encourage them to make it a lifelong pursuit. 

Laurie run string art classes for the Sharjah Book Authority in the UAE, Imperial College London and Chelsea Theatre, as well as Open Art Spaces, Writerz 'n Scribez on behalf of the London Borough of Kensington and Chelsea and the London Borough of Ealing.  

Laurie provides a warm and welcoming environment to adults and children alike. Her calm, patient approach engenders confidence, both in her ability to communicate instructions to her students, and in their themselves as artists and creators.

Once you get the hang of the pattern, you can lose yourself in this meditative activity and before you know it, you’ll have completed what at first glance looks complicated but is in fact a series of repeated stitches.

Each kit is meticulously prepared, with the holes perforated by hand and colourful threads  carefully selected. The kit comes with a 9"x9" mount that is ready taped so that your piece can be framed straight away and put on your wall or given to a loved one.

All kits come with a needle threader and written instructions on how to use it.
