This unique workshop has been designed to offer a full day mindful experience whilst creating your very own Madhubani painting (Indian Folk Art). 

Madhubani/Mithila Painting, meaning Forest of Honey can be traced back to the 7th century AD in the Indian subcontinent, in the state of Bihar.

 Madhubani paintings were traditionally created by the women of different communities, of the Mithila region- Bihar in India, and done on freshly plastered mud (cow dung) on walls and floors of huts, but now they are also done on cloth, handmade paper and canvas.

Madhubani art uses complex geometrical patterns; generally, no space is left empty; the gaps are filled by painting flowers, animals, birds, and geometric designs.

You don’t need previous experience to join. Komal will be taking you step by step in the art of Madhubani Painting. Her workshops are designed to provide a space to connect and bring people together whilst doing art mindfully and increasing a feeling of wellbeing and creative revitalisation.

The first hour includes warm-up exercises using a bespoke-pattern sheet. These sheets are designed to help you learn how to create complex border designs using simple shapes. Each person is provided with an A4 sketchbook in which you will complete a variety of exercises.

To create your final piece I will be taking you step by step in the art of Madhubani Painting. By the second half of the class you will be in a deep relaxed mindful state as you complete your beautiful masterpiece using watercolours, acrylics and fluid acrylic paints.

You get to take back the beautiful painting that you make.

I met Komal Madar at her Stewkley House studio, Perivale, while visiting artists during the BEAT festival (Borough of Ealing Art Trail) in September 2021. I was immediately hooked to embark on the Madhubani art project and my experience was very positive. Komal is an excellent teacher who is passionate about her art and always willing to share her knowledge. I spent six enjoyable evenings at Komal’s studio where I was taught, always in a calm and perfect atmosphere, about this art. I would highly recommend this course with Komal if you are interested in Madhubani art.

**About Mandala**

This unique workshop has been designed to offer a full day mindful experience whilst creating your very own mixed-media Mandala. 

A mandala (Sanskrit: मण्डल, maṇḍala, meaning 'circle'. A mandala is an artistic representation of higher thought and deeper meaning given as a geometric symbol used in spiritual, emotional, or psychological work to focus one's attention. A mandala generally represents the spiritual journey, starting from outside to the inner core, through layers. 

The person who draws the mandala in paint or chalk or creates it with coloured sand or yarn or any other material, is thought to be generating the image from some higher source (it could be one's higher self).

**About the Class**

Komal is opening the doors to her private studio for her much awaited full day **mixed-media Mandala** workshop. This is a small intimate class for a maximum of two students; offering each student time for one to one tuition no matter what your level of ability and confidence. 

Komal’s Indian heritage is an important part of her identity and has profoundly influenced her approach to art. She is currently exploring Tantra Art and meditation art as well as working as a therapeutic art coach. The mandala workshop is close to her heart and has been designed to offer an authentic and thoughtful experience. 

- You will learn where the Mandala comes from & various cultures which use it. 

- How to draw different elements/patterns

- This class teaches you how to create your own beautiful mixed-media Mandala

- You will create your own personalised Mandala on a 40 x 40  Natural Linen Canvas Board. 

- Materials include a straight edge, compasses, fabrics, paint and freehand drawing to build your creation.

- You will receive a pack with all the materials, including bespoke training materials.

- You will have access to a selection of beautiful Indian textile to build your creation. 

- Teas/Coffees and light refreshments will be available throughout the day

I had the pleasure to be one of the students for the Mixed Media Mandala workshop at Komal’s studio. First of all, when you arrive you find yourself surrounded by such beautiful art, it’s so inspiring to have a workshop there and get to see where the magic happens! Komal is amazing, her background as a qualified teacher ensures that all of her classes are well structured and each student is supported and guided. Komal provides all the material, including the fabric, and they are top quality. You leave the class with a beautiful piece of art that you’ll be proud to show on your wall, even if you are a complete beginner and have no artistic knowledge! This is now the 5th workshop that I do with Komal and all of them have been unique and enjoyable, a very mindful experience. I also love the fact that you learn something new about Indian art and culture, and it’s very interesting. Would recommend it to anyone!

Komal Madar is a British Indian mixed-media Artist and Therapeutic art coach, with over 10 years teaching experience in secondary Art & Design education. She works from her London art studio at Stewkley House Art Studios, Perivale. She studied at UAL, Byam Shaw School of art (2007-8), The University of Reading BA, Fine Art (2003-7) and Central St Martins (2002-3).

Madar is a twice-shortlisted artist at La Galleria Pall Mall for the Royal Arts Prize, and has featured in world leading publications like Vogue, House and Garden, The World of Interiors, and Inside Artists magazine. 
 
Madar is a Therapeutic art coach at the London Screen Academy. She combines her passion for art, teaching, and education by using therapeutic art techniques; and mindfulness to help support students to achieve their personal and professional goals within an educational setting. 

Madar has enjoyed the success of exhibiting her work both inside and outside of the UK, and undertaken commissioned art works for well renowned establishments, and sold paintings and Limited Edition prints worldwide. 

She also runs mindfulness art classes in London, specifically teaching Indian Folk Art as well as being an instructor at  Masterpeace Creative Studios in London.
