Rachel - Owner and Founder of 'Craft My Day'

Since completing her degree in ‘Costume and Technical effects for the performing arts’ at London College of Fashion in 2001, Rachel worked freelance in the film and events industries for many years before taking a break to be at home with her three children whilst they were small.

She began teaching at a private sewing studio, alongside freelance work and grew to love the rewarding nature of teaching.

'I can never seem to get enough of learning new skills, which I love to share…'

In 2016 Rachel decided to start up her own Craft studio and began to work with other local artists to create a unique space for people to come and learn a variety of crafts in a fun and relaxed setting. Her passion for textiles and design began during school when she found her own teacher a real inspiration. 'She developed my creativity but also gave me confidence for life. I aspire to recreate that experience, and inspire others to start their own creative journeys.' Rachel qualified as Powertex trainer in 2016 and is also really excited to share this fantastic product.

Rachel believes that all people are creative and with a bit of patience and encouragement can be taught ways to express that innate ability and get a real sense of satisfaction and enjoyment.

I really enjoyed these classes and definitely learnt a lot from them. What I liked the most is that you have plenty of time to finish your skirt which makes the process less stressful and more fun to do and allows time to correct and learn from the mistakes that you will make as a beginner. I would definitely do more classes here.

The class was really well taught and helped build my confidence in macrame - I feel skilled enough to try a new project of my own after this one. The finished hanging is just lovely - already proudly on my wall. I really recommend this course to anyone with an interest in macrame, it is really well taught and an utter delight.

My husband booked the first workshop (Make A Bag) of this 4 week course as a present. Having only done limited sewing whilst at school, I found the class a great introduction into learning how to use the sewing machine and using basic stitches. We were also given paper templates and scrap fabric in order to get used to using the machine and to practice sewing with different stitches and experience how to handle the fabric when sewing in straight lines, around curves and changing directions. By the end of the class, I came away with a beautiful shopping bag that was going to come in handy and that I felt very proud of. Rachel was very friendly, approachable and knowledgeable. All materials were provided and the studio was well equipped with everything you would need (including tea and biscuits!). We had a group of five people which was nice as it was a friendly environment that everyone felt they could ask questions as we went along or general tips and advice on sewing. The studio is a great space which also showcases items that have been made in other classes. There’s so many other art/craft classes that I now want to try! I found the first workshop and my experience very inspiring and this led me to book the other 3 workshops on this course: Making a zipped Make up bag, Make A Cushion Cover with Piping, and Make Pyjama Bottoms. I have thoroughly enjoyed all these workshops (not to mention using my creations!) and my sewing confidence has increased during the course. I would recommend this to anyone interested in sewing or looking to learn some new skills.

Rachel was very knowledgeable and supported us all well, our final pieces completed in 5 hours and uniquely different from each other -I got a few new ideas from watching my classmates too! From one class alone I feel confident and can't wait to pursue new projects inspired by the material. I am very interested in coming back to Craft My Day to see what else I can take up.

I had a great time in our small class of three beginners. It was a three hour morning session, and we were plied with coffees, teas and biscuits throughout. Vicky was very thorough and patient in explaining what to do. I came away with a sample board of the 4 techniques that we had learnt (plus a printed aide-mémoire), as well as two picture frames to which I had applied my choice of paint techniques. I would have liked to have had the option of some bolder paint colours with which to work, and had the opportunity of trying out gilding wax. All said, it was a good introduction.

Having tried to make a necklace before and failed I found this class was essential for getting over all the mistakes I had made. I now, after making a beaded bracelet, have worked out what all the tweaks are necessary to make some beautiful necklaces, bracelets and earrings. The course leader is great and helping you methodically and understand the different ways of doing things. She’s also very flexible - would definitely recommend this class to anyone who wants to learn the basics and elaborate from there.

The PJ ( bottoms only) workshop review. Very nice studio with lots of light. Good Janome machine with a variety of stitches. Pleasant teacher. Workshop was extremely basic. I felt that it should have been advertised as a very basic beginners class. For three hours I had expected a more detailed pattern with at least a separate waistband. I finished one hour and fifteen minutes prior to the end of the class. I would have finished earlier if an overlocker had been made available. Used a stich (similar to an overlocker) which gave a good finish on the sewing machine but this was not as quick to use. However I was the only attendee and have been sewing for 18 months. A good class if you have none or little experience of sewing. A cloth copy of the two piece pattern used to make the Pajama bottoms was given to me as I asked but I was told that normally this doesn’t happen.

The Powertex Taster Workshop is the third craft class I have attended with Craft my Day (Mosaic workshop and Making a Cushion Cover being the others) and another five star success. Powertex is a fabric hardener and is used to create effects to decorate surfaces (in this first instance a bland picture frame) that with embellishments, painting and glazing techniques turn them into veritable works of art. Everything provided, including superb (and friendly) tuition and all materials. A very happy couple of hours spent doing this. Can't wait for the Autumn so that I can book some more.

Ideal venue for a variety of crafts - bright and sunny, big table in the centre, lots of material to choose from and many art and craft items on the walls and around the room. Rachel was lovely - friendly, knowledgeable, helpful. I thoroughly enjoyed the experience. Great value for money. I might well go again, even although it’s on the other side of London. The venue was ideal for crafting - a large table in the centre of a clean, bright orderly room. There were lots of examples of previous work on the walls and other crafts too for inspiration. There were plenty of resources to choose from and the tutor guided everyone through the process. In the time we had. I learned a lot and put some of it into practice very quickly.

The Christmas Card Workshop was a thoroughly enjoyable experience! We had a brilliant time making cards. I am not very creative but I was still able to make some fun and good quality cards with the teaching we received. The workshop is highly recommended to anyone!

The process of creating a glass coaster and dish using fused glass to decorate was carefully explained and demonstrated with the aid of finished examples. We learnt about appropriate health and safety issues, how to cut and glue glass and how to develop a design using a range of prepared coloured glass pre-cut in different shapes and textures, including some ground into quite a fine powder. The fusing process involving the kiln was explained and we then completed the design and making of 2 coasters and a dish which the teacher took away to be fused - the finished products to be collected at a later date. The teacher was extremely informative, helpful and friendly and everyone was put at their ease. Everyone thoroughly enjoyed the workshop which I think could be described as a mindful experience. The venue was easily accessible and comfortable with all the necessary resources and equipment on hand. The studio workshop was well set up with appropriate attention given to health and safety.

This was a well led and extremely relaxing class to attend. We were shown examples of what could be achieved in the session, some technical pointers and clear safety instructions. It wasn't long before we were 'hands on'. All through the session were encouraged to try our own styles but assistance was always prompt if we needed it. The refreshments were most welcome. Our glass was fired, beautifully packed and available at the workshop on the day promised. Clare was extremely sensitive and aware of what we would like to take away from the course. I would thoroughly recommend that anyone should try this craft.

The workshop was great fun and very well organised. Seeing everyone's ideas was inspirational and it was amazing how much we achieved in the time. Total concentration needed so very mindful! Claire is a very good teacher.

I attended the upholstery course on a Saturday morning for four weeks. Bob, our teacher was professional, knowledgeable and very patient! He was happy to explain tasks numerous times and was reassuring if things went slightly wrong! I thoroughly enjoyed this course and would recommend it to anyone who may be interested. Bob was so generous with his time and my footstool takes pride of place in the lounge receiving total admiration from the family. Marianne Carnegie

My daughter and her three friends had a really lovely time, and Lee went out of her way to do lots with them once they finished their first tie-dye. And they all came home with a T-shirt and a cushion. Would highly recommend as a fun outing for kids. Thank you!

I really enjoyed attending the course each week. By the end of the 4 week course I had made a baby sized patchwork quilt. The course gave me some good basic knowledge and has inspired me to continue to develop the techniques and make some more quilts.

I had a brilliant morning making a powertex Christmas wreath. The teacher first explained how the class was covered under COVID rules then we were shown step by step how to make a wreath using powertex material and gave us information on the history how powertex started . I very pleased with the wreath that I made within a an enjoyable tutorial.

What a wonderful class! I've been to two face to face macrame classes in the past and I've never learned this much before! This class works really well online, I could see everything clearly and it was explained very well. The project was perfect because, it being small meant that we could finish it in the session and learn as much as possible in the time. We learned the knots of course but also the terminology, how to read a pattern and how to scale up to make a larger wall hanging. The teacher also let us pick her brain about other projects we could do and was very generous with her knowledge. I am delighted, thank you!

Really enjoyed this class. Really good fun, great teacher (really spends time making sure that you understand what you are doing and comfortable with it) and really nice to be able to achieve something tangible in the time. You can use pretty much any type of cord / string to do macrame- but you get better results with certain types of cord. It would be good to have a list of the cords that give you better results before the class,

Enjoyed the class. Lisa was extremely patient with me as I had the wrong wool (acrylic) and was struggling with it splitting. Am pleased to report that I know have the correct wool and have found it much easier and have just completed my first square. Will certainly sign up for a follow up course after some more practice.
