Evening

Slow-making to relax after work ~ a pottery class designed to give you the space and techniques to create a tumbler/mug, a plant pot, a spoon or a bowl. We will use a red terracotta clay and make marks with tools and brushes, adding splashes of colours to enhance your piece/s.

Francesca will be your tutor for this class, providing instructions and demonstrations along the way. This class is a great introduction to the physicality of materials and to the basics of pot making.
This is a small class of up to 4 people to allow plenty of individual tutoring.

Pinch

Pinching is a technique by which you create an opening in ball of clay and squeeze the clay evenly using fingers, thumbs and hands to control form and surface.

Decorating Techniques

In addition to learning to pinch you will also explore ways of developing surfaces through pressing, carving and slip (liquid clay) application.

What a great class. I was transported back to childhood, playing with clay in art classes. Clay is just a lovely medium, the tactile immediacy allows you form ideas with comfortable ease... It takes a great teacher to point that out and Francesca offered just that in a comfortable and friendly environment. Highly recommended.

Loved the session! Tiny, lovely studio with everything needed for a fun night. Francesca was very good at explaining the pinching process and shared ideas on what can be achieved with a variety of tools and techniques. I was not expecting to be able to complete a small piece in two hours, but I was pleasantly surprised. Francesca is very knowledgeable and uses simple terms when introducing the subject, which makes learning easy. I had a great night and would definitely recommend it (and attend) again!

Went back to collect the pinch pot I made in a previous class and took the opportunity to have another go. This time I worked on a pinched pot using a different clay and it is amazing to see how this can totally change the way you work. Also explored more slip decorating techniques. Absolutely loved it!

Pinch-a-Pot Evening Clay Workshop by F V Ceramics - art in London

About your host, F V Ceramics

Francesca has been working as a ceramic maker since 2001 and graduated from Central Saint Martins with Hons in 2009. She established her studio in 2015 and have been working under F V Ceramics ever since.

She has been teaching adults both at her studio and at a North London’s art centre for the last two years. In the past she has been involved with a children art charity, delivering after school clay activities to primary school pupils and their parents.

In her practice she uses mainly porcelain, creating collections of jewellery and tableware that she sells at markets and online. Pure and coloured porcelain bodies are combined to produce simple and elegant designs to wear and adorn our body and home.

Francesca runs weekly evenings and weekend classes in the main hand-building techniques - pinching, coiling, slabbing - and introduces decorative techniques for clay using slips (clay paints) and textures. She loves teaching and giving others a platform to encounter materials and learn skills to express their imagination and creativity in a relaxed, social and informal setting. She offers two clays, a red terracotta and a while smooth, plus a selection of materials and tools, including plaster moulds and a potter's wheel.

Her studio is located between Earlsfield and Tooting and within a thriving community of artists and makers. The studio is easy to get to by train, bus and has free parking on site.
