About this class

Shibori, like you have never seen it… Oh, wait, you have never actually seen it before and you are wondering what the hell Shibori is? Even better.

This class welcomes all levels of Shibori-ists, so find your inner Japanese and get on down for this awesomely authentic day of Shibori.

Did you know?

Shibori gone mainstream! Tablecloths to duvet covers or iPhone cases to wallpaper, this ancient Japanese resist-dying technique of shibori has kicked off. Vera Wang, Ralph Lauren, Eileen Fisher, Levi’s are amongst the fiber artists who are breathing new life into this amazing craft.

In this class

In the morning, learn the traditional methods and techniques of dyeing your creations in indigo to achieve a range of beautiful blues. You will perfect a number of traditional Japanese patterns and learn to dye with indigo using a pre-prepared vat. You will also learn how to unpick your finished work to reveal your designs!

In the afternoon you will put the techniques into practice! Master the three basic folding techniques for preparing fabric for clamp resist dying, known as 'Kikko' - equilateral triangles, right angle triangles and squares. Finally, set up an indigo dye bath to get different shades of this lovely blue for multiple final effects.

Finish with a beautiful indigo tie-dye creation.

Rob Jones, your teacher, will be guiding you through all of these techniques as well as through the practical methods to make sure your finished article is perfect.

Now you can

  • Pull off some fabulous new looks – all with your very own patterns and style. Check these girls out! Or if you are going for that hip lad look;
  • Add Shibori to your already outrageous range of talents;
  • Add a Japanese-inspired piece of decoration to your home to go with that old edition of Shogun.

Keep

Your own Shibori design to take home with you and impress your family and friends with.

Meet

Maybe your future husband or wife, maybe even a summer fling… You never know until you have tried! For the less romantically ambitious amongst you, bring along that friend who could do with some cultural and creative enrichment!

Your guide

Rob Jones is a textile designer specialising in the ancient Japanese art of Shibori, using stitch, bound and clamped resist techniques to create intricate patterns and textures on scarves, table linens and lampshades. He selects both new and vintage textiles, sourcing beautiful old kimono silk from Japan and vintage and modern cloth from the UK for his creations, made at his studio in North London. Rob has studied at West Dean College and under Bryan Whitehead in Fujino, Japan in 2014.

Save your spot

Don’t let this one slip away. These places will go quickly, so book now to avoid disappointment.

Things to remember

  • Bring along some small textile articles to up-cycle, e.g. napkins, t-towel, t-shirt, pillow case or 'fat quarters'
  • Fabrications has some fabric you can use if you don't have anything you'd like to Shibori

NB: fabrics must be natural fibres, cotton or linen are ideal and must have been washed and dried in advance of the workshop. The fabrics can have a slight print on, which will get over dye.

Fabrications - an East London based creative hub!

Fabrications is an independent gallery, shop and workshop dedicated to the best contemporary textile practice and design, with a particular interest in eco-conscious design.

Fabrications opened in June 2000 in a refurbished derelict shop on Broadway Market in Hackney, East London. The shop's founder, Barley Massey, has spent the last 16 years finding ingenious ways to turn scraps into original fabrics and using recycled materials to create cutting-edge items. Since 2012, "The Imaginarium", a fully-fitted working studio, has hosted workshops and classes.

Barley has been awarded as one of Kevin McCloud's (Grand Designs) Green Heroes for her minimally-processed, up-cycled products, which "demonstrate a lightness of touch backed up by a rigorous approach".
