About this class

If you think tie dye was just a 60s or 70s hippy craze, meet Shibori, its modern, more mature cousin. Using a deep indigo hue and some traditional Japanese patterns you can create your own oriental decoration. Want to have these shibori items decorating your house or person? Find out how and book onto this exciting new course!

Did you know

Started in the 8th century; it was the last good donated by the Emperor Shōmu, before his death, to the Japanese people.

In this class

This session expands the range of Shibori techniques from the Beginners Shibori morning class, focusing on clamping resist techniques, known as Itajime

This workshop will teach the three basic folding techniques for preparing fabric for clamp resist dying, known as 'Kikko' - equilateral triangles, right angle triangles and squares. These can be varied to achieve different effects. Also you’ll set up an indigo dye bath to get different shades of this lovely blue for varied final effects.

Rob Jones, your teacher, will be there every step of the way to guide you through some of these techniques.

Now you can

  • explain to people what shibori actually is!
  • recreate the amazing 'Sekka' (snowflake) Japanese design in the comfort of your own home
  • make authentic handkerchiefs, face towels and other homely accessories

Keep

Your own designs on any fabric you’d like, a tea-towel, beach robe or anything you can think of that’d look awesome in tie-die indigo blue

Meet

Sign yourself up for Fabrications Shibori improvers class if you want to meet people with an adventurous streak, a yearning to try something new or to meet those fellow Shibori addicts!

Your guide

Rob Jones is a textile designer specialising in the ancient Japanese art of Shibori, using stitch, bound and clamped resist techniques to create intricate patterns and textures on scarves, table linens and lampshades. He selects both new and vintage textiles, sourcing beautiful old kimono silk from Japan and vintage and modern cloth from the UK for his creations, made at his studio in North London. Rob has studied at West Dean College and under Bryan Whitehead in Fujino, Japan in 2014.

Save your spot

Spaces are limited to a small handful of people – don’t miss out!

Things to remember

  • Bring along some small textile articles to upcycle, eg napkins, t-towel, t-shirt, pillow case or 'fat quarters'
  • Fabrications has some fabric you can use if you don't have anything you'd like to Shibori!

NB: fabrics must be natural fibres, cotton or linen are ideal and must have been washed and dried in advance of the workshop. The fabrics can have a slight print on, which will get over dyed

Fabrications - an East London based creative hub!

Fabrications is an independent gallery, shop and workshop dedicated to the best contemporary textile practice and design, with a particular interest in eco-conscious design.

Fabrications opened in June 2000 in a refurbished derelict shop on Broadway Market in Hackney, East London. The shop's founder, Barley Massey, has spent the last 16 years finding ingenious ways to turn scraps into original fabrics and using recycled materials to create cutting-edge items. Since 2012, "The Imaginarium", a fully-fitted working studio, has hosted workshops and classes.

Barley has been awarded as one of Kevin McCloud's (Grand Designs) Green Heroes for her minimally-processed, up-cycled products, which "demonstrate a lightness of touch backed up by a rigorous approach".
