About this course

An exciting two-day intensive course focusing on plaster casting from waste moulds to plaster piece moulds, to eventually casting a sculpture and looking at finishing options. Open to all levels.

Did you know?

Due to a metal shortage during the Second World War, Oscars were made of painted plaster for three years. Following the war, the Academy invited recipients to redeem the plaster figures for gold-plated metal ones.

In this class

Day One You will make a quick clay sculpture and a plaster waste mould and then cast in fast set concrete. Participants then have the option to cast a small object they have brought in, or select something from around the workshop to make a plaster piece mould.

Day two You will finish the plaster piece mould and have the options of making a cast in wax, plaster or fast setting concrete with colour pigment finishes.

It’s all very hands-on with plenty of time to discuss projects in detail with the tutor.

Now you can

  • get an overview of what wonders are possible to make with mould - making and casting
  • a chance to re produce or design your own sculpture or object in plaster
  • leave the class with a handmade product of your own

Your teacher

This class is taught by artist and sculptor Robert Worley. A graduate Royal College of Art his art depicts monstrosity, doom and the ancient.

London Sculpture Workshop is the first, not-for-profit, community interest organisation, based in London, with exceptional facilities for artists and those interested in making work in 3D. Its workshop is right on the river by Thames Barrier and has incredible views of the Thames guiding lots of inspiration for 3D pieces. It offers a superbly equipped metal and wood workshop with additional mould making and ceramic areas.

London Sculpture Workshop was established in 2012 by two founding members Giles Corby, MA (RCA) and Jessica Mello, MFA (Slade) and it also has a studio manager Melis van den Berg, MFA (Slade). They are all practicing artists’, bringing their own ideas and inspiration to the organisation, and between them, have 21 years of teaching experience.

In 2013 and 2014 London Sculpture Workshop was awarded awarded a “Artist’s Run Space Award” by the Chelsea Arts Club Trust.
