Bookbinding in the Middle Ages was a bit fancy. Ivory, wood, leather, brass and sometimes even jewels were all used in the bookbinding process. It’s would have been hard not to judge a book by its cover when they’re made of such exquisite things! Get en route to rivalling the medieval masters in this unique Object Book workshop in Merton.
The three-day workshop will begin with paper. You’ll use locally sourced cotton textiles to create paper with your own hands. You’ll then learn simple binding techniques for turning those sheafs of paper into a bona-fide ‘sculptural book’. The books will take over the window of Object Book studio for a week, after which you’ll go home with your creation under your arm.
Your sculptural book can be folded shut after its stint in the window display, and then it’s yours to keep. Display it, gift it, build upon it.
The studio is an inclusive accessible space that beckons in brains and bodies of all types. Bibliophiles, writers, readers, craftspeople and inquisitive minds are sure to fill this workshop.
Jane Ponsford is an artist and papermaker based in London and South East England. She works using repetitive processes, constructing sculptural forms made up of hundreds of near identical fragments to make bookworks, sculpture and installations.
Although in the past she has used a variety of materials, recently she has mainly concentrated on working with handmade paper.
