The photography gurus at National Geographic have labelled the striking ‘Afghan Girl’ as one of the world’s most iconic photographs. Published in 1985 by Steve McCurry, the photo of a 12-year-old Afghani girl taken in a refugee camp during the Soviet occupation of Afghanistan is famous for the girl’s piercing eyes and the story behind them. Just one example of the type of narratives photos can tell.
In this class, you’ll use photographs - either your own or sourced elsewhere - to make a narrative photo book. The book will not necessarily have to follow a linear order, and experimentation will be encouraged. You’ll design the narrative first, sequence the photographs, and then bind them together yourself using a simple ‘pamphlet stitch’ book-binding method.
Participants are asked to bring their own photographs to use. You’ll leave with a photo book you’ve created yourself, bound and all: a corporeal story to hold in your hands.
This workshop is sure to attract storytellers of all kinds: writers, artists, photographers, students, curious and adventurous human beings.
