If you have attended the morning class 'Improvers Sewing', this session will put everything that you've learnt into practice and you will leave with a unique made to measure skirt or pair of shorts. You can "upcycle" a man's shirt into a skirt (if you bring it yourself).
Archaeologists believe that people used to sew together fur, hide, skin, and bark for clothing as far back as 25,000 years ago. The sewing thread they would have used consisted of thin strips of animal hide that were used to stitch together larger pieces of hide and fur.
If you attend the afternoon class only, to be confident that you will complete the garment in time, you will need to have basic sewing machine skills and have an understanding of how to sew seams, put a zip in, create a button hole and add a bias binding. Barley will of course support you through the making process from measuring your body, using a pattern, cutting out pattern pieces, assembling and finishing.
Leave the class with a skirt of pair of shorts made by your own fair hands!

Fabrications - an East London based creative hub!
Fabrications is an independent gallery, shop and workshop dedicated to the best contemporary textile practice and design, with a particular interest in eco-conscious design.
Fabrications opened in June 2000 in a refurbished derelict shop on Broadway Market in Hackney, East London. The shop's founder, Barley Massey, has spent the last 16 years finding ingenious ways to turn scraps into original fabrics and using recycled materials to create cutting-edge items. Since 2012, "The Imaginarium", a fully-fitted working studio, has hosted workshops and classes.
Barley has been awarded as one of Kevin McCloud's (Grand Designs) Green Heroes for her minimally-processed, up-cycled products, which "demonstrate a lightness of touch backed up by a rigorous approach".
