This class is the first three hours of a six hour, full-day session - if you just want to dip your toes into the world of embroidery, you can just take this class and see how it goes!
The most important piece of equipment an embroider needs is the embroidery hoop. This is a circular wooden frame. It is composed of two wooden circles that fit each other. A piece of fabric is placed in between the rings and stretches it tightly. The embroidery hoop clamps down on and holds it flat. The hoop helps embroiders a lot - you will learn all of this in the class!
This is the ideal min-masterclass for the beginner as you learn the art of hand embroidery by working on a design inspired by allotment gardening. You will learn some embroidery stitches that will leave you able to embellish dinner party napkins.
Bella will be preparing special embroidery kits for £12 containing an instruction sheet, needle & threads (which you can buy on the day), oh and there will be embroidery hoops available to use (which can be purchased in the shop after the class too) but you are welcome to bring your own supplies if you already have them!
Take home your embroidered pieces to decorate your kitchen table or give as a gift!
The teacher of the class, Bella Lane, is from Iquitos in Peru and is a master Peruvian embroiderer who trained at the Royal School of Needlework and a world embroidery stitch collector. What a treat you are in for with this embroidery expert.
This is a small class so sign up quick!
I would have liked the class to be longer - think it could be split into 2 classes to lean pattern transfers & to try out all of the basis stitches in class

Fabrications - an East London based creative hub!
Fabrications is an independent gallery, shop and workshop dedicated to the best contemporary textile practice and design, with a particular interest in eco-conscious design.
Fabrications opened in June 2000 in a refurbished derelict shop on Broadway Market in Hackney, East London. The shop's founder, Barley Massey, has spent the last 16 years finding ingenious ways to turn scraps into original fabrics and using recycled materials to create cutting-edge items. Since 2012, "The Imaginarium", a fully-fitted working studio, has hosted workshops and classes.
Barley has been awarded as one of Kevin McCloud's (Grand Designs) Green Heroes for her minimally-processed, up-cycled products, which "demonstrate a lightness of touch backed up by a rigorous approach".
