About this class

This class is the second three hours of a six hour, full-day session - if you just want to dip your toes into the world of goldwork paisley, you can just take this class and see how it goes!

Did you know

In Europe, embroidery was a status symbol. The use of a needle and thread in order to sew patterns on fabric was a sign of wealth and prosperity. It was considered a woman's work. Many royal and noble ladies spent hours embroidering. They embroidered everything, from tapestries to coats.

In this class

There is no shortage of designs and stitches you will learn whilst you explore the rich tapestry of the textiles of the Amazon rain forest of Peru.

Goldwork embroidery is one of the oldest and richest techniques of hand embroidery. It has been practiced since ancient times - using gold, silver, copper and wire threads for ecclesiastical costumes in Europe. Today goldwork embroidery appears in art forms and in fashion and the class is eco-friendly too as you will be working with recycled fabric.

Bella will be preparing special embroidery kits for £15 containing an instruction sheet, needle & threads (which you can buy on the day), oh and there will be embroidery hoops available to use (which can be purchased in the shop after the class too) but you are welcome to bring your own supplies if you already have them!

Now you can

  • take your stitching game to the next level with this beautiful Indian Paisley design
  • feel inspired and ready to embark on your own embroidery designs!
  • learn the history of Goldwork embroidery

Your guide

The teacher of the class, Bella Lane, is from Iquitos in Peru and is a master Peruvian embroiderer who trained at the Royal School of Needlework and a world embroidery stitch collector. What a treat you are in for with this embroidery expert.

Fabrications - one of Hackney's most creative studios!

Fabrications is an independent gallery, shop and workshop dedicated to contemporary textile practice and design, with a particular interest in up-cycling and eco design.

Fabrications opened in June 2000 in a refurbished derelict shop on Broadway Market in Hackney, east London. The shops founder, Barley Massey, has spent the last 16 years growing Fabrications into a buzzing hub of creativity.

In 2011 "The Imaginerium" was built - a bolt-on to the Fabrications shop that is a fully-fitted working studio with a welcoming and inspiring atmosphere that is now dedicated for classes and workshops.
