Yeast in the East is a crash course in sourdough bread-making. In this jam packed, 3.5 hour long workshop, you will learn the basics of all things yeasty.

Suitable for beginners who want to learn about bread making from scratch or for people who dabble in baking and would like to know more about sourdoughs and baking with different types of yeast.

We will cover:

  • Ingredients and proportions
  • Yeasts! Sourdough, packet and fresh yeasts, plus how to make your own starter.
  • Long prove and sourdough breads, enriched & sweet dough
  • Stretch and folding, proving and shaping
  • Baking in a wood fired oven and a guide to baking in a home oven.

You will be taught our basic sourdough recipe. You will take home all you make in the session, which include doughnuts, focaccia and a lavender sourdough for you to bake at home.

About your host, The Bread Companion

The Bread Companion is a nomadic, microbakery that travels around encouraging people to eat, buy and bake their own bread and generally take more control over their food! Inspired by communal bread ovens of the past, the bakery uses a wood fired oven to bake bread, run supper clubs and events, as well as to teach people how to make their own homemade loaves from scratch. Run by baker, Julia Georgallis, TBC has run a great many workshops all over the place, from Stroud to Sweden, council estates to glampsites.

TBC is currently running a ferment focussed crash course in sourdough bread making, Yeast in the East in Leyton, East London. The classes are aimed at beginners who would like to learn how to make a sourdough loaf and those who have dabbled in bread making before but would like to consolidate their skills.

Notes

There will also be a light dinner provided and some doughy snacks along the way (please let us know if you have any dietary requirements). This class is suitable for all ages. Bring your own bottle of booze to enjoy if you like!
