GWO KA (meaning ‘big drum’ in French Creole) is one of Guadeloupe’s traditional dances.
On the sugar cane plantations of old, on the habitations, the slaves were allowed to gather on Sundays and dance in the so-called kalenda, and exorcise the harshness of bondage.
This workshop will be a discovery of the seven main rhythms of GwoKa and an incentive to express their very nature in emotions. After listening to the rhythms, the basic steps of two rhythms will be taught, to complete a variation, and then we open a léwòz circle for an improvised performance…
