FAQs
Do you offer concessionary rates on courses?
On our Family courses we run a 'Pay it Forward' model where customers can make an additional donation to fund a space for a family on low income. If you need a low income space on this course please contact us and we will let you know when there is a funded space available.
Can I change my booking?
You can cancel or reschedule your booking for any reason up to 7 days in advance of the course. However, the more notice you can give us the better so that we can offer your space to someone else. Last minute reschedules are only available in exceptional circumstances e.g. sudden illness or injury. You must inform us as soon as you become unwell and you before the start of the course. If you would like to change your booking at late notice (within 7 days of the course) and you do not have an exceptional circumstance, we will offer your place to the waiting list and reschedule or refund your place only if someone else takes it up.
I am booked on a course, is it going ahead?
Yes, you will receive a reminder 3 days before your course. If you haven’t received this please check your spam. We will only cancel a course in the event of extreme weather conditions or if the tutor is unwell and we cannot find a replacement.
It’s raining, is the course going ahead?
I’m afraid so, please come prepared. We have tarps to put up, so even if it’s torrential we’ll try to keep you dryish. We work outdoors in all weathers and will only cancel courses in the event of extreme weather conditions which would make the courses unsafe (ie. a red warning from the Met Office with risk to life). Please come prepared for the weather. In the winter we recommend thick-soled boots, layers and fingerless gloves. We do not allow anyone to work with tools in full fingered gloves unless they have a medical reason for doing so. In the summer we require covered feet, no sandals or bare feet please, and recommend a hat and suncream.
Can I bring a teenager to your adult classes?
No, the minimum age for our adult classes is 18yrs. Once a person has reached the minimum age required to buy a knife, they can join our courses.
Can I bring a younger child?
Unfortunately not. The lower age limit for this course is strict and younger children are not allowed to attend. This is for safety and also because they are likely to be frustrated by the course and put off whittling in the future, better to wait until they are old enough.
Can I bring more than one child?
We recommend all families attend with a 1-to-1 adult to child ratio the first time they come. After that if you think you would like to supervise more than one child, please speak to the tutor about it at the end of the session.
My children are different ages which session should we book?
Please book both children on the session that is appropriate for the younger child. We promise we will make sure there is enough of a challenge for the older child too.
Can I drop my child off?
No, each child must be accompanied by an adult who will stay and participate fully.
Do you have any more dates planned?
We aim to teach this course once a month, we sometimes add extra dates for the school holidays. You can join a waiting list to be notified of new dates, https://london-green-wood.widget.obby.co.uk/event/family-whittling-6-9yrs-1533218835/dates Each specific date also has it's on waiting list, which will be notified if there are any cancellations.
Is this course suitbale for children and young people with SEN?
Yes. If you are confident managing your child's behaviour around knives during this session, then we are happy to work with you whatever additional needs they have. If your child has needs that are likely to affect how they experience the session, please contact us in advance so that we can let the tutor know.
Is this course suitable for people with disabilities?
The course is held outside, and there is a disabled toilet at Hackney City Farm. However there is rough terrain on the way in and within the workshop. We will do everything we can to make all our courses accessible to everyone regardless of disability. If you are thinking about a course and are unsure if this would suit you, please contact us to discuss. Often in these instances we find the best thing is to arrange a visit, so you can see the workshop and decide for yourself.

We both learned a lot and have been practising at home feeling safer and more knowledgeable. Thanks so much. See you again in July.

My husband and I attended one of their Saturday family workshops at Hackney with our two children as absolutely beginners, and it went very well! Dave was very patient and kindly helped everyone working on their chosen project, and we also had the chance to interact with other families. Great experience!

We have been running events and teaching courses since 2011. We promise a beautiful setting, friendly people, the satisfaction of learning new skills and a fire when it gets chilly. We run courses for adults and for families. We offer low income and unwaged concessions on many of our courses.

We learned so much in our whittling session. I feel confident that we can embark on some home whittling now, having been inspired by what we can create and also how to make safely. Thankyou so much!

Laura Redman - 14 June 2022

Me and my daughter really loved the class. thank you so much . we both learnt a lot and the tuition was very relaxed and we got to know the rest of the group a bit as well which was fun. well done. I think setting up the seats beforehand would have given us a bit more time to whittle - then would be 5 stars
Madeleine Bowyer - 13 June 2022
Great day out so nice to be whittling in nature in the middle of Hackney what a brilliant group very welcoming and felt safe at all times. Very much look forward to doing another workshop soon.
Zach King - 19 February 2022
Esther was fantastic - really patient and helpful when there was something the kids were finding tricky. Zach was teaching his sister how to whittle yesterday and they were busy with it most of the day!! Thank you - would recommend

Really nice course in spite of the cold
Agi Tsang - 13 November 2021
We really enjoyed the class and hope to be back regularly from spring. The class was well organised, the leading lady ( bad memory to names 🤦‍♀️ Sorry) was very friendly, knowledgable and with positive attitude and approach to kids. We were lucky to have a small class of only 2 families. Thoroughly enjoyable experience.🙏
Vanesa van Vlerken - 17 October 2021
We had a lovely time whittling. The place is lovely and the person teaching as was super nice. I wish they had a regular weekend course for kids.
Noah Schenato - 24 July 2021
Sorry, We missed the lesson because of external event !!!
Maeve Barclay-Brown - 30 June 2021
We didn’t really know what to expect but everyone absolutely loved this, a big groan went up from kids and adults alike when the teacher said we only had a few minutes left. The teacher was lovely, endlessly patient and good-natured. We all want to do it again.
Julian Madams - 15 June 2021
The session was well structured and lasted two hours outside under the trees. We used green wood that had been freshly cut that day. We learned various techniques on knife holding, types of wood, what part of the tree to use to make different utensils, what to do to preserve the wood if you need to pause the project for a while. We worked on a marshmellow stick and a butter spreader. We didn’t finish. Ben was a great teacher; we had a lot of fun.
Esther Oxford - 20 April 2021
My 13-year-old son and I really enjoyed this session at Hackney City Farm. We made a butter knife and a marshmallow toasting fork - sitting by a fire. Jo and her colleague are charming and precise teachers. I highly recommend.
Alice Toomey - 8 April 2021
We had a wonderful day, and came away wanting more, so already planning our next session. Thanks so much!
Luíza - 10 November 2020
This was a great class. Our girls are 10 and 15 years old. and in our class they both got to use the axe, the saw and the shave horse, all taught really well and safely. We came home refreshed after our time outside without screens and enjoyed it so much that we will be booking again sometime next year.
Jennifer - 28 October 2020
My 10 year old son and I loved this workshop. He was given so much independence to use the tools himself and great guidance to use them safely. He learnt loads and felt really proud of what he achieved.
Jessica - 5 August 2020
We really enjoyed it. Well organised and in a great location. It's good to learn something new and have something to take home with you. My daughter wants to go back and do more.
Vitor - 25 November 2019
Amazing Class
Emily - 11 June 2019
This was a great workshop, we both really enjoyed it. It was really good to go to a workshop for a parent and child to learn a new skill together. I was hoping for a hand carving course though so we could continue at home after the course, so a little more information about the content before would have been very useful. We will probably try and book another one in the summer though, the venue was good as was the instruction.
Grainne - 16 April 2019
Both 9 year old Dermot and his grandad loved the session and plan to book another one very soon! 5 stars!
Kim - 12 April 2019
It was fantastic! Jo showed us, in stages, what we needed to do and let us get on with it. My son, Harry, loved it because he was able to be really hands on with the tools and you also get to take your piece home with you at the end. I especially loved it and we are now looking forward to our next workshop together with Jo. Highly recommend London Green Wood CIC and Jo for her lovely calm and informative approach.
Chrystalla - 4 April 2018
An inspiring afternoon workshop from which we not only took away our wooden creations but sound knowledge of types of wood and safe whittling tips. Getting to work on the 'shaving horse' with a two handled knife was an added bonus. Great to be outdoors working with our hands - we loved it! Thank you.
Bridget - 4 April 2018
Fantastic. Lovely surroundings, and nice to do something calming and learn a new skill!
Gemma - 19 February 2018
