Want to find out more about decoupage before committing to a longer workshop? Learn to embellish a photo frame (supplied) in just a couple of hours. Once you've acquired the basic steps of the technique, you may want to book more detailed classes where you can decoupage a serving tray, a pair of shoes or a piece of furniture.

In this workshop

During this two-hour workshop, you will select papers from Gabriela's extensive collection to transform a plain photo frame into your unique creation through decoupage. She will guide you through the design process and show you all the tricks involved in applying very thin paper to a flat surface.

These sessions are held in small groups to allow for individual tuition, and take place in my Camberwell studio.

Did you know?

Découpage (French for "cutting out") is the art of cutting and pasting cutouts to simulate painting on a wood, metal, or glass surface. There are many variations in technique, but the four basic steps of decoupage generally are cutting out the pictures, arranging them to depict a scene or tell a story, pasting them on a surface, and applying several (sometimes up to 12) thin coats of varnish or lacquer to the pictures.

Thank you Gabriela for a lovely few hours making a decoupage picture frame. The picture frame is an ideal project for a first attempt at decoupage. I was really pleased with my finished piece but I mostly just appreciated the chance to try out the technique in a relaxed studio environment.

My beautiful chair is eye-catching and all my guests have commented on how beautiful it is. I still contemplate it myself.I definitely recommend Gabriela's workshop. I have learnt a great deal, the atmosphere was very friendly and the venue too is worthy visiting.

Gabriela Szulman 's decoupage class was held in a very pleasant welcoming studio. She had plenty of materials for our chosen projects and gave plenty of handy hints when required taking us through the various stages. We all sat round one table making the experience very friendly. We could also pick up tips from others. She sent an email after the class indicating where materials could be purchased so we could experiment at home. Very successful. Janet

Introduction to Decoupage Workshop by Gabriela Szulman Art - crafts in London

About your host, Gabriela Szulman Art

Gabriela is an artist and maker. She creates prints and collages, greeting cards, jewellery and scarves with images inspired by memory, nostalgia and a love of everything vintage.

Her work is often humorous and whimsical – unless her romantic side takes over and then you enter into a fairy-tale territory of old-fashioned script, pages of books and music scores populated by chivalrous gentlemen, glamorous ladies, butterflies and rabbits. She blends a fusion of painting and digital media – acrylic, watercolour and ink with digital print – onto paper and canvas to create pictures, quirky greetings cards and a range of “art to wear” which so far includes silk scarves and a jewellery collection.

Old photograph albums, vintage documents, magazines, books, cards, knitting pattern books and scraps of writing are things that make Gabriela very happy. Second-hand bookshops, junk shops, market stalls, attics and long-forgotten boxes are her treasure trove.

In addition to her own creative pursuits, she is passionate about inspiring other people and sharing her skills, so she devotes a good portion of her time to teaching.
