Daytime

A plain glass storm lamp can be transformed into something really special using reverse decoupage. You will learn to apply layers of paper "upside down" to create your own design following a mosaic pattern.

During this 3 1/2 hour workshop, you will select papers from Gabriela's extensive collection to transform a 22-cm tall plain glass stom lamp (supplied) into your unique creation through decoupage. Gabriela will guide you through the design process and show you all the tricks involved in applying layers of thin paper to a glass surface. You will go home with a very decorative stom lamp which is perfect as a centrepiece for a table and can be used with pillar candles, tea-lights or even fairy lights.

Did you know?

In the 18th century, decoupage became such a rage among upper-class French women that they cut up paintings by noted artists such as Watteau and Fragonard for their decoupage projects. Famous ‘decoupeurs’ include Marie Antoinette, Lord Byron and Beau Brummel.

A fantastic session creating a decoupage storm lamp. Gabriela was really helpful as applying the decorative elements to the inside of a glass curve is much harder than it sounds! I also had time to decorate the glass base. Unfortunately my daughter loved the storm lamp so much that I had to give it to her, so at least I'm now fully informed on how to make another for myself !!

I've been to various workshops at Gabriela's studio and I enjoyed all of them. Gabriela is wonderful and really good at introducing you to new techniques, very patient and great at helping you explore your creative side. I highly recommend to take The Storm Lamp class as you not only will learn but you will you leave with something you can truly be proud of.

Wonderful workshop in a very warm, creative space. Gabriela is an excellent teacher patient and encouraging - the hours flew by, I would have been happy to stay all day. Living in such a fast paced city it is great to be able to slow down and focus on decoupage. The storm lamp has been much admired.

This is the second course I've done with Gabriela. Her studio is a lovely place to work, full of interesting things. She teaches in a very clear and supportive way so you leave feeling you have really learnt how to decoupage. Classes are small so you get plenty of attention and help. The storm lamp was a different decoupage technique - a little bit fiddly but the end result is amazing. I've had a lot of compliments on my finished item.

Glass Decoupage Workshop: Upcycle a Storm Lamp by Gabriela Szulman Art - crafts in London

About your host, Gabriela Szulman Art

Gabriela is an artist and maker. She creates prints and collages, greeting cards, jewellery and scarves with images inspired by memory, nostalgia and a love of everything vintage.

Her work is often humorous and whimsical – unless her romantic side takes over and then you enter into a fairy-tale territory of old-fashioned script, pages of books and music scores populated by chivalrous gentlemen, glamorous ladies, butterflies and rabbits. She blends a fusion of painting and digital media – acrylic, watercolour and ink with digital print – onto paper and canvas to create pictures, quirky greetings cards and a range of “art to wear” which so far includes silk scarves and a jewellery collection.

Old photograph albums, vintage documents, magazines, books, cards, knitting pattern books and scraps of writing are things that make Gabriela very happy. Second-hand bookshops, junk shops, market stalls, attics and long-forgotten boxes are her treasure trove.

In addition to her own creative pursuits, she is passionate about inspiring other people and sharing her skills, so she devotes a good portion of her time to teaching.
