This dress making class will give you that new look you've been waiting for. It's perfect for both beginners ready to challenge themselves and experienced sewers looking to learn a new trick. We are "Bettine" you will have a fun time!
In this class
This workshop will introduce you to the process of dressmaking, including how to cut out your pattern, setting up and using a domestic sewing machine and building your confidence in making your own clothes. Barley will guide you through the process of making a stylish 'Bettine' dress from a 'Tilly & the Buttons' pattern (choice of 2 designs), providing tips and expert help along the way!
The 'Bettine' dress features a blousy bodice with scoop neckline, kimono sleeves, turn up cuffs, elasticated waistline and tulip skirt. It is simple to sew, with no fiddly darts, fastenings or set in sleeves. The plain skirt version is a perfect first dress project for beginners. If you're more experienced, why not try the pocket skirt version and optional cuff tabs. This is a comfortable, wearable dress you'll want to throw on every day!
Now you can
Your stunning dress, the pride and joy of your wardrobe!
Dresses have evolved through time, from 16th century corsets, to the more varied styles we see on the high streets today. However, I doubt anyone, historian or not, could foresee how much they would evolve! If you haven't seen it, take a look, as singer Lady Gaga turned up for the 2010 MTV awards in a dress made of raw beef!

Fabrications - an East London based creative hub!
Fabrications is an independent gallery, shop and workshop dedicated to the best contemporary textile practice and design, with a particular interest in eco-conscious design.
Fabrications opened in June 2000 in a refurbished derelict shop on Broadway Market in Hackney, East London. The shop's founder, Barley Massey, has spent the last 16 years finding ingenious ways to turn scraps into original fabrics and using recycled materials to create cutting-edge items. Since 2012, "The Imaginarium", a fully-fitted working studio, has hosted workshops and classes.
Barley has been awarded as one of Kevin McCloud's (Grand Designs) Green Heroes for her minimally-processed, up-cycled products, which "demonstrate a lightness of touch backed up by a rigorous approach".
