    What you'll learn

Considered to be the queen of fabrics - master its craft in this morning class and make a new or upclycled silk camisole.

    In this class

This class is for those with previous experience using a sewing machine. You will get to grips with how to work with silk, a particularly tricky material, and be guided through the process of making a pretty camisole top from silk scarves and clippings.

By the end of this class you will be confident in handling, sewing and cutting silk - that is no easy feat! You will learn how to cut a simple pattern, assemble pieces on the machine, use multiple stitch functions and up-cycle everyday silk scarves into something beautiful.

Materials and refreshments are included - but if you want to bring your own silk fabric or scarves please feel free.

    Now you can

    • become confident with the nature of silk and how to upcycle with it.
    • get advice and guidance throughout the class
    • become a (silky) smooth operator!

    Did you know?

The shimmering appearance for which silk is prized comes from the fibre's triangular prism-like structure which allows silk cloth to refract incoming light at different angles.

    About your host, Fabrications

Fabrications - an East London based creative hub!

Fabrications is an independent gallery, shop and workshop dedicated to the best contemporary textile practice and design, with a particular interest in eco-conscious design.

Fabrications opened in June 2000 in a refurbished derelict shop on Broadway Market in Hackney, East London. The shop's founder, Barley Massey, has spent the last 16 years finding ingenious ways to turn scraps into original fabrics and using recycled materials to create cutting-edge items. Since 2012, "The Imaginarium", a fully-fitted working studio, has hosted workshops and classes.

Barley has been awarded as one of Kevin McCloud's (Grand Designs) Green Heroes for her minimally-processed, up-cycled products, which "demonstrate a lightness of touch backed up by a rigorous approach".
