What you will do

Single session

Taking place at Heather's home in Camberwell. You will be fuelled by plenty of home made cake, teas and/or coffee. With a maximum of four participants, these three hour workshops are designed to provide everybody with plenty of time for one on one attention. Heather always aims for sessions to be flexible to individual participants needs.

You will be guided through how to lay out the fibres to make a flat piece of felt as well as using carders to blend colours. Then using the reference material you have brought with you, learn how to create a simple figurative or abstract image on the top. Lastly you'll learn how to transform all the loose fibres into a piece of cloth.

If you can't quite decide what type of image to create Heather's home is full of art and design books and if need be she can print you an image to adapt.

Wet felt making is a simple process (once you know how) made up of a series of repetitive actions. Many people find it relaxing and some a stress buster. But, elements of felt making are quite vigorous and very hands on. If you have arthritis in your hands you may find parts of the process challenging. That being said it’s not stopped anybody before and Heather is very happy to help you with vigorous parts of the process.

Allergies to cats or indeed wool? Please note Heather has three cats (they’ll be elsewhere in the house during the workshops). Antihistamines are available but her workshops may not be for you.

Did you know?

Was it Noah who invented felt? Purportedly so. Covering the bottom of the Ark's hull with sheep's fleece, rain plus friction from the animals hooves and humans feet created what we now call felt. Or did St Clement invent wet felt making when he popped some fleece inside his shoes to stop blisters when setting out on a mission? Likely neither: beautiful pieces of felt dating from as early as 4th Century BC have been excavated from nomadic cultures in the Altai Mountains, Southern Siberia.

Tabletop Workshops @ Purr & Wag It is run by Heather Fiona Martin.

Purr & Wag It (PaW), her wet felted pet portraits and landscapes small business was born out of a gift for her brother. It marries her love of animals with her love for making and in particular pushing the boundaries of fine detail in wet felt making.

She lives with her daughter and 3 cats. Winnie and the boys will be elsewhere in the house during the workshops but if you have cat allergies Tabletop Workshops may not be the right creative space for you.
