What you will do
5.5 hour workshop
Lora Avedian is a South London based textile artist specialising in embroidery, who studied Embroidery BA at Manchester Metropolitan University. After spending several years as a set designer and stylist, she then went on to study Mixed Media Textiles at the Royal College of Art, graduating in 2017.
She has worked freelance for artists such as Tracey Emin and fashion designers JW Anderson and Alexander McQueen. Lora has shown her work at London Craft Week, London Design Festival, Barbican Centre and sells her interior textiles through The New Craftsmen in London.
Lora depicts elements of narrative through traditional embroidery and embellishment techniques to make modern artefacts, which look as beautiful on the body as they do on a wall. She favours slow processes, focusing on short run and bespoke projects. During this Masterclass you will Learn how to make silk flowers with textile artist Lora Avedian. Students will learn how to create 3D silk flower stems, starting with painting onto silk using silk dye to create original and beautiful petal colours. You will then learn how to bind and hand sew the stem of the flower. Once the silk for the petals is dry we will use Lora's signature pleating technique to create the petals, and students will learn how to attach these to their stem by hand. You will then learn how to make an embroidered or beaded centre for the flower, and how to create a leaf to go on the stem.
