    About this course

This 4-evening quit-making course with Judith Dahmen is the perfect opportunity to add a creative string to your bow. Learn how to make a beautiful quilt, and pick up all the best tips, tricks and secrets along the way!

    Did you know?

The word ‘quilt’ dates back to circa 1250. The term in Middle English was ‘quilte’, based on old French word ‘cuilte’ derived from the Latin word ‘culcita’ for mattress.

    In this class

This 4-evening course will teach you all that you need to know about making a quilt. Starting from the design process to piecing, machine or hand-quilting and finishing with the all important binding, this course will cover all the fundamentals.

Please note that there will be some homework for this course and students who do not own a sewing machine at home may arrange to use the shop’s machine for free in between classes.

Students must also know how to use a sewing machine prior to signing up to the course. Furthermore, students will need to bring or buy the fabric, wadding, thread and basting pins for this class. These materials include the following:

    • On the first evening you'll only need the fabric for the front of your quilt.
    • Front fabric: A variety of fabrics for the front adding up to approx 1 square metre (not smaller than 5" squares). If you're bringing/buying fat quarters, this works out to about six. Charm packs are also a good option.
    • Back fabric: One piece approximately 1 square metre
    • Binding fabric: Half a metre
    • Wadding (must be at least 40" x 36")
    • Thread for quilting, plus thread for homework (neutral piecing thread will be available for use in the shop)
    • Safety pins for basting (about 60)

    Now you can

    • Create wonderful quilts at home
    • Make unique and personal gifts for friends and family
    • Pass on your newly acquired skills to others

When you finish the course, you'll leave with a stunning finished lap or baby-sized quilt measuring 36" by 40".
