On This Course You Will Learn: How to transform the shape of steel using heat and blacksmithing techniques.

  • You will be introduced to the tools used by blacksmiths and use them to learn techniques that will allow you to manipulate hot metal into different shapes. By the end of the day you will have a good understanding of the forms that blacksmithing can produce and how to achieve them.

  • Throughout the day we will look at the different approaches needed to work with different sections of steel stock. You will try tapering, bending and twisting metal.

  • By the end of the day you will have made several small functional objects e.g. coat hooks/fire pokers/toasting forks that you can take home with you.

About your host, Urban Crafts Foundation

The Urban Crafts Foundation is a social enterprise based in Essex. From their forge at Lambourne End Centre for Outdoor Learning they deliver blacksmithing classes at an affordable cost to young people facing difficult life challenges that might stem from health or social issues. They want to help people within the community flourish by offering a creative program of education in a nurturing environment, that is characterised by physically engaging, meaningful work. When mainstream schooling isn’t working they want to step in and help students gain skills, qualifications and confidence that will help them transition into a life of worthwhile work and give them a valuable place in society.

Their work with young people is subsidised by events we run from our forge and through our mobile forge facility. These include lessons with members of the public, team building events, demonstrations and 'have a go' sessions at festivals.

Urban Crafts Foundation firmly believe that the best way to appreciate a skill is by having a go yourself. Whether that's simply learning the right way to knock in a nail, or how to make the hammer you'd hit it with, their team is dedicated to providing the guidance and resources to help you improve your skills, environment and enjoyment of life regardless of your background or ability.
