What happens in this class?

The 3 hour workshop is an introduction to the art of Letterpress and shows you how to compose the metal / wood typeface, use the machines and print your own type based artwork in the form of greetings cards, post cards and gift tags.

It is the epitome of a great way to get creative and share, build on ideas, get lost in a sea of letters and think about what it is you want to say to the world. The attention it takes to write backwards focuses the mind and you will be overwhelmed with the sense of satisfaction that…

The Letterpress session I had with Emma was excellent! I had not done this before, and was pleased to get patient and considered guidance from Emma on how to perform the technique. We learned the principles first, and then fairly quickly moved into creation mode, with a generous provision of cards and postcards to print on. I ended up creating 3 slogans and felt like I'd produced something of value to take home. It was a relaxed and informative 3 hours. The added benefit was the location - set within a series of arches that are part of a charity that makes unused spaces productive for artists. I've planned to go back and do another session, so I need to crack on with checking my calendar! Highly recommended.

We had a brilliant time learning the art of letterpress. Emma was a brilliant tutor, really patient, passionate and super knowledgeable. It was such a relaxing class, taking time to pick out our type and set up our prints - there was a great deal of flexibility with Emma allowing you to pick out your own types, colours and paper-type to print onto. It was also a really lovely touch to be welcomed with a pot of tea and lots of biscuits! The class was incredible value and offered the perfect amount of time to see if you like it. Top tip, have a think about what you'd like to write before the class, so you don't waste time like I did! Highly recommend this class - I even want to buy my own Adana press now!

Such an awesome workshop which has left me thinking about buying my own letterpress! Emma was so super lovely, so knowledgeable and clearly super passionate about what she does. She was keen to impart knowledge and was so helpful and patient. A great teacher and a great workshop!

The Colour Press is a printing studio nestled under a railway arch in London. Here you will find an Aladdin's cave of letterpress goodies.

As a child, Emma was always drawn to anything handmade and found great joy in creating beautiful cards for the people she loved. As she got older and moved from crayons to collage and even to silk art, the passion for making things stayed the same. Over the years, Emma became the go-to-girl for personalised wedding invites and found such satisfaction in being able to use her design skills to help friends and…
