What you will do
Four session course
Over the course of 4 weeks you will learn the basic techniques of handbuilding in clay and how to glaze your bisque pieces. In your first session we will also look at pattern and colour and choose a decorative technique to apply to your individual work. In your last session you will be shows how to apply glaze. Each session will include demonstrations and guidance through the making process and ideas on how to design each piece to create a coherent set.
4 sessions of 2 hours over 4 Saturday or Sunday mornings. Please note that I need a min booking of 2 people to run the class or it will be cancelled.
Session 1: Pinch a tea cup, bud vase, spoon...
Session 2: Coil a bowl, plant pot, berry bowl...
Session 3: Slab and press mould a plate or a bowl
Session 4: Glaze your pots
Pinch: a technique by which you create an opening in a ball of clay and squeeze the clay evenly using fingers, thumbs and hands to control form and surface. Coil: a technique by which you roll rope-like coils evenly and construct your pot by fixing them together. We will focus on building one large piece such as a vase or a plant pot. Slab: a technique by which you roll out sheets of clay to place on plaster moulds and to cut shapes from paper template to build with.
The clay, materials and tools will be provided. Francesca will also bisque your pots ready to be glazed by you on your last session.

About your host, F V Ceramics Studio
Francesca has been working as a ceramic maker since 2001 and graduated from Central Saint Martins with Hons in 2009. She established her studio in 2015 and have been working under F V Ceramics ever since.
She has been teaching adults both at her studio and at a North London’s art centre for over two years. In the past she has been involved with a children art charity, delivering after school clay activities to primary school pupils and their parents.
In her practice she uses mainly porcelain, creating collections of jewellery and tableware that she sells at markets and online. Pure and coloured porcelain bodies are combined to produce simple and elegant designs to wear and adorn our body and home.
Francesca runs weekly evenings and weekend classes in the main hand-building techniques - pinching, coiling, slabbing - and introduces decorative techniques for clay using slips (clay paints) and textures. She loves teaching and giving others a platform to encounter materials and learn skills to express their imagination and creativity in a relaxed, social and informal setting.
Her studio is located between Earlsfield and Tooting and within a thriving community of artists and makers. The studio is easy to get to by train, bus and has free parking on site.
