2 hour class
This is a taster session and shows a snippet of what goes on in our working studio. Here, we teach the beginning stages of throwing on the wheel. Starting by kneading the clay and preparing it into balls, big and small, so you can work your way up in scale.
You will be shown a demonstration and have 1 to 1 support to help you grasp this masterful process. It can be difficult if you are learning it for the first time and by all means we do not expect you to be an expert in less than 2 hours but we think we are pretty good teachers and will have you all going home with at least a few pieces if you wish, or a lot more. We want you to enjoy the experience in our zen studio.
On the wheel, you will learn how to centre the clay, open it up and pull the walls up into a cylinder to start with and then into any form you want. We see a cylindrical form as a starting point, learn how to gather hight first, and then stretch into various forms. We explore open forms such as bowls, plates as well as the tall and narrow, such as vases and bottles all in 2 hours, just to give you an overview of how this works and what it involves. You then may select your favourite 3 pots to glaze or keep them all to start a 4-week throwing course.
If you choose to return for the glazing session, this will be arranged immediately at the end of the session at £20. Your pots will be turned at leather hard stage (footings will be carved into the bottoms for you) and then bisque fired ready for your glazing session.
The glazing session is in- depth and can take equality as long as the throwing session with over 30 stoneware glazes to choose from- all hand made by us! You will be taught how to apply them and combine glazes together to create a selection of beautiful finishes.
We ensure quality. If your class doesn't reach your expectations, we'll give your money back.
This is a Flexitime class, which means the teacher can run this class around your schedule.

About your host, Freya's Clay Club
Freya's Clay Club is a friendly family run studio that offers pottery classes for masters and beginners to the craft! Master potter Chris Bramble runs the daytime sessions and daughter Freya runs the evening and weekend classes.
Pottery is their family trade! This story began with ceramics sculptor Chris Bramble becoming a father. Chris has been making ceramic art for over 30 years, also teaching in schools and colleges. Chris has twin daughters called Freya and Yolande who both grew up with clay at their fingertips, always helping out although originally taking their father's craft for granted, they are now both part of a growing pottery business. Freya is a fine artist who wants to get everybody involved. She started teaching children during her studies in Fine art and everything began to grow from there. Yolande is a theatre practitioner specialising in participatory theatre and sensory based arts. They also have Michael, our technician and a group of helpers that they teach in exchange for helping them out with all the daily chores.
Together Freya's Clay Club love to make art with people of all ages. They love it because it teaches them about the simplicity of life and allows them to offer a bespoke pottery service, that is both small and intimate, with a style that is unique. They have found ways to quickly relate a beginners hand to clay for the first time and an affinity in pushing experienced potters to the next level of their learning.
We welcome beginners to all the fun! Bring nothing but a smile for this masterful art form. You are in for a treat! We provide aprons. Though please wear comfortable clothes and shoes and ones you don't mind getting messy in. Eat before you come so you are full of energy, we have tea and coffee. Long fingernails can be difficult for throwing- recommend trimming them!
