Six session course
In this course you will be making a number of colour and pattern studies, and an abstract mosaic sized 30x30cm. You will learn the basics of andamento styles (classical, modern) and colour theory for mosaic (colour transition, contrast, materiality). Based on a chosen design you will exercise your understanding of the use of colour and andamento in mosaic, so that you can transfer this to any future projects.
Design ideas could be one of the following:
- arrangements of simple shapes e.g. Henri Matisse especially his cut outs, Joan Miro or Paul Klee
- a pattern e.g. Art Deco floral pattern, mosaics by Emma Biggs
- a colour field or transition e.g. Mark Rothko
- pixillation, e.g. Georges Seurat and Paul Signac
This is a unique opportunity to gain insight into what we're teaching on our Diploma in Mosaic Studies in the module Mosaic Design: Concept and Realisation.
Participants from all levels of skill are also welcome to join this course and practice their mosaic making skills at our well-equipped studio. We have a large range of vitreous glass tiles in many colours and finishes.
- introduction to andamenti styles (classical and modern)
- introduction to colour theory for mosaic
- how to draw a design for mosaic
- how to make colour studies and samples of andamento that serve as context for a bigger mosaic project
- the direct method of mosaic directly onto wood
- how to work with nippers to cut mosaic (vitreous glass tiles)
- how to grout and clean your mosaic
