What you will do

2.5 hour workshop

Daytime

You will engage with matter and explore the qualities of each material you use as you learn to react to what you see. Students will learn the building blocks of observational drawing, foundations in colour, perspective, mark making, application and composition using: charcoal and ink, painting in acrylic and oils, A5 monoprints using a printing press.

Observational skills will allow you to build on your own work whilst engaging with the work of other artists to create a strong portfolio of research that will enable you to conceptually and technically create a work of art. Over the course you will discover how to act on a range of starting points, experimenting with different materials and techniques to build on your chosen subject matter. Students are encouraged to develop their practice outside the studio by taking photographs, sketches, collecting objects or material that will be relevant to their area of study.

Week 1 - 2 : The student will learn observational drawing from set objects in the studio, using drawing techniques in charcoal and ink, ranging from quick ink studies to a finished charcoal or ink drawing. This part of the class begins as a group activity which requires the student to produce 10-15 quick studies using large brushes and Indian ink, creating a deep focus between subject and object that will produce a line that captures the essence of the object. The students then move on to longer pieces in charcoal that look at composition, proportion, perspective and tone.

Week 3 - 4 : After accomplishing the first level of line and tone drawing, the students will move on to a brief introduction to colour theory. The student will gain an understanding of hue, saturation, tone, and colour mixing. Students will create 3 - 4 mono prints using oil based ink on zinc plates, printed on somerset paper through a printing press. These are unique pieces that are both complete as objects in themselves but are also useful studies that can be taken forward for painting. The next consecutive weeks will focus on the student developing a series of paintings in Acrylic (beginners) or Oil (intermediate). They will learn how to create tonal under paintings, how to use the correct brushes, and how to layer colour to describe their subjects. Depending on the experience of the student, they will move on to oil painting in the 5th week. Exceptions can be made for students who are at an intermediate level and who wish to focus solely on oil painting. Oil painting can only be offered to children who are exceptionally diligent and over the age of 12, as it requires a considerable amount of preparation and discipline.

Week 5 - 6 : Students will continue developing their paintings or drawings employing the skills they have learnt in previous weeks. They will be encouraged to make annotations in sketch books that will help their work evolve after the 6 weeks of the course as a new area of study they can carry on. Following the introductory course students will be well prepared for the intermediate level and may embark on oil painting.

Portfolio preparation for GCSE, A-Level and Scholarships is available to ambitious students who wish to expand their practice in a larger space and work on more challenging projects that might combine more than a single medium. Students can book one to one at flexible times, contact for more details and availability.

Fine Art Introductory Painting and Drawing, 6 week Course by Gala Bell Studio - art in London

About your host, Gala Bell Studio

Gala Bell Studio is a fine art studio in west London, dedicated to teaching painting and drawing from the artists' own workspace.

Gala Bell is a London based multidisciplinary artist. Engaging with ideas of value, taste, hierarchy and absurd labour, her work is the aftermath of a reaction to substance and situation. Materials and actions become metonymic, swapping roles between quotidian interactions and traditional art processes.

Bell is a graduate of the Royal College of Art and City and Guilds Art School London. She has been selected for exhibitions with The Victoria and Albert Museum as part of the Great Exhibition Road Festival, The London Design Festival with Mint Gallery, Kunsthalle am Hamburger Platz in Berlin, and Galerie der HBKsaar in Saarsbrucken. Bell has had commissions by BBC One and Tate and Lyle for her sugar sculptures, with a piece acquired by the Tate and Lyle Museum archive in London. She has been included in publications with Dazed magazine and Art Reveal, with interviews by BBC One Tribe and The Royal Docks.
