Daytime

In this workshop you will learn how to create an original picture using a combination of painting and collage. You do not need any special skills to take part so don't worry if you can't paint or draw! Gabriela will guide you through the technical process and help you design a composition that works. By the end of the day you will leave the studio having completed a picture that you will probably want to hang on the wall when you get home.

You will use acrylics, printed papers and magazines from Gabriela's extensive collection to create your very own masterpiece on strong card stock (supplied). Alternatively, you can bring your own support (a flat surface such as a piece of wood or a stretched canvas) or purchase a 40 cm square canvas at the studio for £10.

All materials plus refreshments and a light vegetarian lunch are included in the cost of the workshop.

Did you know?

In 19th century England, during the Victorian era, hand colouring and intricate cutting out gave way to the more sentimental, florid collage-style of this art form. This coincided with the introduction of Valentine cards, decorative and embossed papers and braids to embellish surfaces such as screens, lamp bases, linen boxes and much more. Many a Victorian nanny taught her young charges to beautify objects by applying decorative paper pieces to them.

Really loved this workshop and Gabriela was an amazing host and teacher. She explained the process of making a collage thoroughly and allowed sufficient time to test different acrylics and techniques. And always willing to offer a helping hand or word of advice.

I have attended a number of courses for various different hobbies, but the Collage and Multi Media with Gabriela is one of the best and I will be returning to do it all over again. A lovely atmosphere and Gabriela is so helpful - I really enjoyed by day.

I never considered myself naturally creative so I was very unsure about how I would go at this workshop. Right from the start, Gabriela created a relaxed and friendly atmosphere, and provided really clear and helpful guidance to get me started. Gabriela provided a fabulous range of materials, and had an excellent knack of drawing out my own ideas and inspiration and then advising on how I might best give effect to them, as well as making her own creative suggestions. Gabriela was on hand through out and provided a really high level of individual attention. She stayed completely calm - even when things didn't go quite as I planned - and was really reassuring and encouraging. I was absolutely delighted with my final piece - it far exceeded my expectations of what I might be capable of - and that is due in no small measure to Gabriela's expert input and tuition. It was one of the most absorbing, interesting and fun workshops I've done, and my piece now hangs proudly on my kitchen wall. I cannot recommend Gabriela's classes highly enough.

Gabriella’s workshop was wonderful and I look forward to returning. All the materials needed and so much more. A small group of four only meant she was able to give us all attention and answer all our questions. The delicious lunch she prepared and small touches of tea biscuits and strawberries were so thoughtful and gracious just like Gabriella

I did the full day workshop with Gabriella Szulman recently (I had earlier done the half day decoupage workshop and enjoyed it so much I came back to do the full day workshop) Gabriela creates a relaxed and safe environment to learn and experiment, all the while supported by Gabriella both from a technical point of view (materials, tools, techniques) as well as an esthetical PoV (what looks good, how to improve things) and has lots of examples and materials available to be inspired by. Many thanks Gabriela!

Gabrielle is a great tutor. She is friendly, knows her crafts inside out, informative and very talented. I left her course with enough knowledge to continue practicing on my own to further develop my skills but would not hesitate to attend another of her workshops. As another plus her premises are inspiring and her cookies and lunch are delicious. What more could you ask for?Lynda Parkinson-Garde

Collage and Mixed Media Workshop by Gabriela Szulman Art - art in London

About your host, Gabriela Szulman Art

Gabriela is an artist and maker. She creates prints and collages, greeting cards, jewellery and scarves with images inspired by memory, nostalgia and a love of everything vintage.

Her work is often humorous and whimsical – unless her romantic side takes over and then you enter into a fairy-tale territory of old-fashioned script, pages of books and music scores populated by chivalrous gentlemen, glamorous ladies, butterflies and rabbits. She blends a fusion of painting and digital media – acrylic, watercolour and ink with digital print – onto paper and canvas to create pictures, quirky greetings cards and a range of “art to wear” which so far includes silk scarves and a jewellery collection.

Old photograph albums, vintage documents, magazines, books, cards, knitting pattern books and scraps of writing are things that make Gabriela very happy. Second-hand bookshops, junk shops, market stalls, attics and long-forgotten boxes are her treasure trove.

In addition to her own creative pursuits, she is passionate about inspiring other people and sharing her skills, so she devotes a good portion of her time to teaching.
