Introduction to Drawing 1

Born in London, Sue studied Art at Harrow School of Art and DeMontfort University and was awarded a Royal Society Of Arts Travel Scholarship & Associate membership.  She produced props and set design painting for major London theatres,  followed by textile design for the Scandinavian market at the legendary Bernat Klein Studios.  

After six years as Head of Furnishing Textile Design at Liberty of London, Sue concentrated on her own art establishing the Hope Collection with her husband prior to entering into teaching art to adults and children.  She was Head of Art and Head of History of Art at St. James Senior Girls School and is an OCR A-Level Moderator of Art and AQA - A Level History of Art Examiner.

Sue has been successfully running art classes in a variety of disciplines, at the Watermans Art Centre, Brentford, since February 2018
Since lockdown she has given online watercolour classes to adults. As these classes have proved to be very popular, she is intending to continue for the foreseeable future, thus enabling a wider geographical area to be covered.

Pottery wheel taster - learn to throw like a pro from expert tutors, relaxing atmosphere with in the old zip factory hidden away from the crazy world.

Learn how to throw on the pottery wheel. Get creative and relax and find your inner peace through the art of throwing on the wheel.
Skills to be learn on the day will include hand building using coils and slabs then the pottery wheel throwing .

Our tutors will go over the basic steps to help you transform a piece of clay into a piece of art with the 2 to 3 hours class.
Your work will be Biscuit fired then glazed. Three weeks after the class, you will be able to collect your pieces.

Pottery Workshop

On this throwing workshop, you will learn a little about the properties of clay and the importance of wedging. You will also learn how to centre, open and pull up the walls of your pot. There will be a maximum of seven people on this throwing workshop and each person will have their own dedicated wheel for the entire length of the session. There will also be two teachers with a teacher/student ratio of 1 teacher to 3.5 students. Please note, this is a group class. If you are looking for 1 to 1 teaching (one teacher to one participant) or 1 to 2 (one teacher to two participants) then you may find that a private session works best for you.

You can keep your best pot to take home, after it has been fired and glazed for you.  Please note that the last 10 minutes of the class is dedicated to studio practice, which involves cleaning of your wheel and tools.

What happens to your pots after they have been thrown?
At the end of the workshop you will choose your best piece or pot to keep. Two days after the workshop, your pot will be turned (trimmed) on the wheel for you.  Your pot will then be put on a shelf to dry for several days. Once dry, it will be ready for it’s first bisque firing in the kiln. After the bisque fire, your pot will be glazed and once again put through the kiln, but this time for the final glaze firing.

As you can see, your wheel throwing  experience is only a small part of a much, much longer and very labour intensive process. Turning (trimming and shaping your pot on the wheel) and glazing are all part of the making process and just as important as throwing on the wheel.

When your work is ready for collection, usually two or three weeks after the class, you will be able to collect your pieces! Collection is from Sak Beh Pottery and the collection dates are listed on the Sak Beh Website. So please check the Sak Beh Website for your collection date by clicking the tab, collection of pots. We don’t send out emails as they tend to go to spam folders or are not read.

Due to limited shelf and storage space, pots or work that remain uncollected one month after notification will (sadly) be disposed of.

(If you wish to keep a second pot, there will be an extra charge of £8.)

Want to have a go on the potter's wheel and also hand-sculpt a beautiful pot?
We welcome you to have a taste of both at Maison S.Sommet!

This experienced and friendly team offers a warm, stylish and spacious pottery studio, the perfect place to unwind with clay. They are passionate ceramicists and will make sure you make the most of it.

You will be welcomed with a beautiful set-up of your own tools and your own desk space to create amazing handmade pottery. You'll then kick off the learning portion of the class with demonstrations on the secrets of sculpting.

Learn about coiling and all the tricks to wheel throwing in only a few hours. Your teacher will also have prepared clay coils for you to use so when it’s your turn to get your hands messy, you'll be confident to create your fun masterpiece!

Finally decorate your pieces with a selection of 8 coloring slip before you go!

At the end of the class, your beautiful pottery pieces will be taken away to be professionally glazed and fired, ready to collect after 3 weeks to display at home or give away as handmade gifts! (Optional delivery can be arranged on the day).

Your preferred ceramic piece comes with the cost of the workshop, any other additional pieces you would like to keep are £5 per piece, so please remember to bring cash on the day.

Pottery taster- Hand-building & Throwing on the potter wheel 

The classes are run by artists with over 20 years experience who have an amazing passion for their art forms. The artists will inspire you to explore your creativity in a relaxed learning environment. These classes cover the basics as well as more advanced techniques – dive in at whatever level suits you!

For drop-ins you create a mosaic tile to take home. The studio shelves are full of treasure for you to use. One of the best stocked mosaic studios in London. The range is unbelievable.
You will be introduced to the fundamentals of mosaic which can allow you to progress onto further projects, e.g a mosaic art piece, plant pot, mirror frame, table top - we have all the bases for you to choose.

Our studio is set in a gated community garden which makes it a quiet and relaxing environment.

Take a leap of inspiration and create something that is truly you, with this hand-building workshop.

Playing with colour, shape and texture, pushing your ideas to create something functional and/or purely decorative out of clay.

This workshop will provide you with  basic hand-building techniques (slab building, pinch, coiling),  that  give you the confidence to go ahead and create your desired piece/s. It's all about being relaxed and finding your happy place.

This workshops main focus is about  pushing the boundaries of traditional forms/pieces. We explore alternative colours, shapes and textures, adding a special twist to make it all the more unique and adventurous.

Session

The session is split into 2 parts.

Part 1 - We dive into the basics of creating a simple hand-built form with a short demo and chat.
Optional - Taking inspiration from the ideas you will have collected (a little light homework prior to attending the 1st session, details provided in the confirmation email), then the building begins.

Part 2 - Will be spent glazing your wonderful greenware work using underglazes.

These are  2.5hr sessions. Personal and individual guidance is given throughout.

All clay, tools, underglazes are provided and included in the fee.  You are welcome to make as many pieces, as the time provides. Please note 1 piece you'd like to keep is included in the fee. Any additional pieces you'd like to keep incur a £3 (per piece) charge, payable on the day, please remember to bring cash.

We begin with Colour ! * *(Allan will supply paper for this exercise) and we conclude the class with a painting of your own. Two Easy Steps is all it takes on Allan's ONE DAY TWO PART PLAN   Designed to teach you the basics of oil painting and enable you to successfully develop your future as a painter, Allan focuses on the basic knowledge of oil paint and colour,  in the first part of this class and in the second puts your skills to test when you paint your own picture with ongoing support.

Part 1 : The Essentials 11.30am -1.00pm

Primary, complimentary secondary, tertiary colours Relationships between colour combinations, oppositional energising and harmonious warm and cool colours. Mix a custom palette and save money when purchasing your “start up” colour palette tube paints. You are now ready to tackle your first painting.

Break

Part 2 : Paint Your Picture 2.00pm -5.00pm.

Paint Materials and images provided. Please supply your own canvas and we will provide an image or bring your own image if you want to paint a favourite.

You will learn and have continuing support with - composition, canvas wash, blocking in, bringing your painting to completion. Finding and developing your own style, application techniques, impasto and/or thin glazing, colour saturation, blending, painting wet on wet, volume, perspective and much more.

Oil Painting Art Classes, Beginners, Refreshers, Saturday, Sunday, Weekday, Evening, Classes

The workshop is about learning the use of traditional Japanese hand tools, the process of inking wood blocks, printing on different types of handmade paper and developing a new understanding of various techniques in woodcut art. All of which enable you to make numerous fine art prints to take away at the end of the session.

Everyone will be provided with:
Sets of 5 traditional Japanese hand tools
1 x 4mm A4 Shina ply woodblock - slightly smaller block for evening session
Blocks can be cut and printed on both sides
3 x types of printmaking papers (including Japanese Hosho paper)
Water-based inks, pencils etc. - Pre-cut shapes and pattern blocks to use in compositions.
Tubes are provided for all prints to take away at the end of the session.

Intro - Cups of tea, coffee or soft drinks followed by some words
from Alex on his printmaking career.

Throughout the session,  Alex will give an overview of this ancient art form (woodcut is the oldest print process) and has a culturally rich history in China, Japan, Mexico, Brazil and most recently in Germany with the Expressionists. Contemporary artists such as  Grayson Perry, Tom Hammick, Christiane Baumgartner, Eileen Cooper and Rebecca Salter continue to inspire and push the medium into new and exciting places.

Stage 1 - Alex will cover the use of hand tools to design, draw and cut woodblocks and explore the process of hand printing using traditional Japanese barens (circular discs wrapped in bamboo) and rollers on three types of paper.

Stage 2 - Delve a little deeper, with examples on how to use multiple blocks, reduction-cutting techniques and the importance of block registration to create more complex multi colour prints.

Stage 3 - This a perfect opportunity to make multiply prints through editions, ending the final part of the session by experimenting with your favourite design or playing with various colours.

Stage 4 - Everyone's prints will be individually wrapped in sheets of tissue paper and rolled up into tubes for safe passage home.

Kintsugi Class For Beginner's, Japanese Ceramics


This is a great introduction to pottery in a small class with lots of teacher support. There is a maximum of seven students to two teachers.  That’s 3.5 students to one teacher. If you are looking for one to one attention please consider a Private Class.

As an introduction to pottery, this class comprises of both throwing on the wheel and hand building. You will have your own dedicated wheel. We also offer beginner classes devoted solely to wheel throwing and beginner classes solely devoted to hand building. But if you just want to give everything a go in a relaxed and bright studio, then this is a perfect first step into pottery.

This is a fun class and you will be shown how to centre your clay on the wheel, open your pot and pull up the walls. You will also be shown how to make pots using hand building techniques involving the manipulation of clay, using the hand only. These techniques are pinching, coiling and slab building.

At the end of your class you can keep your best pot which will be fired twice and glazed for you in our lovely studio white glaze. Your pot will be ready for collection three weeks after the class and the collection dates will be listed on the Sak Beh Pottery website. We don’t send out emails as many end up in spam folders or are not seen. So please remember to check the website for your collection dates.

 Pottery Taster Class

Learn the ancient Japanese technique of Nerikomi. Nerikomi is a decorative ceramic process which involves stacking coloured clay and then slicing through the cross section to reveal a pattern, which can then be used as a surface decoration. The outcome reflects a combination of both careful planning and accidental surprise resulting in colourful and endless surface patterns.

In this 3hr course you will be taught various Nerikomi techniques which can be applied in into your own choice of tableware – dish or plate. Choose from our range of colours to create  more traditional marbled patterns or a more freeform organic design.

CLASS OVERVIEW

Geometric & Organic block making demonstration: Learn a range of Nerikomi techniques which will allow you to make a various patterns. These can be applied in multiple ways to create a unique range surface designs. Our teacher will take you through each step showing you 3 or 4 basic techniques which will allow you to decide on your own mix of colours and patterns you wish to use.
Slab Rolling & Press moulding: Learn how to shape the decorated clay into different dish shapes using a variety of our studio mould.
Create your own patterned dish, or more if you have time.

The class is designed for adults, however, children under the age of 16 are welcome, but must be accompanied by a ticket paying adult.

Cornish Coast - Acrylic Painting Kit

In this 2 hr workshop you will learn everything you need to know about slip-casting with liquid porcelain clay and working with plaster moulds culminating in your own little set of tableware (1-3 pieces)

You will first choose from our selection of studio moulds the shape you would like to cast. Then use the pre-mixed coloured stains to marble, drip, splatter or paint onto you mould which once cast will result in your own unique porcelain tableware piece.

After you have gone home we will fire and glaze your work with transparent glaze resulting in fully functional porcelain tableware. Your pieces will be ready for collection within 2 weeks of your workshop.

CLASS OVERVIEW

The class will start with a slip-casting demonstration given by one of our experienced tutors.
You will then select the first mould you wish to work with, decorate & cast it.
Each piece takes around 45mins to cast and un-mould and clean up. Giving you enough time to make 1-3 works depending on the complexity of the decorations.
We will fire and glaze your work once you have left and it will be ready for collection within 2 weeks of your class.

The class is designed for adults, however, children under the age of 16 are welcome, but must be accompanied by a ticket paying adult.

Porcelain Slipcasting Workshop - Working with Liquid Clay and Moulds

This fun pottery workshop, you'll have the opportunity to play and experiment as much as you like, all whilst making a beautiful ceramic keepsake. Perfect for anyone looking to try something new or has already tried it and wants to do more!

During this pottery workshop, you'll gain practical skills and understand the basics of working with clay on the pottery wheel.  Take the opportunity to slow down and sink your hands into the present moment.

At the end of the class, you'll have a beautifully finished piece to call your own. If you love your clay creation and want to keep it forever then there is also the option to have the pottery glazed and fired (£5 per piece).

All material provided.
Collection 3/4 weeks after the session and will be kept for one months after the collection time .
In light of the current COVID-19 please be aware of the health and safety guild-lines. The studio is fully sanitised and cleaned before and after the workshop. Everyone is provided with antibacterial wipes, sanitisers, gloves, and disposable aprons. Please feel free to bring anything else with you to keep you safe and protected.

Majolica, or the Azulejo tile, is a traditional way to decorate and glaze ceramic seen primarily in Mediterranean countries. This technique which originated from the Moors varies in colour pallet and pattern finish depending on the region. Cobalt and other oxides are painted onto an unfired tin glaze resulting in vibrant colours with remarkable definition.

On this course you will learn everything you need to know to complete your own set of hand painted, colourful, ceramic tin glazed tiles. You will learn everything from the mixing of the colours to the application of traditional repeat geometric patterns. If you’re feeling adventurous you can deviate from the provided stencils and create your own unique set of tiles.

CLASS OVERVIEW
Colour mixing: Here you will learn how to properly weigh and mix the coloured stains used to paint with. This step is vital if you wish to continue with these techniques at home but there will also be a range of pre-mixed colours for you to work with.
Glazing, mark-making and painting demonstration: Here you will be shown the 3 basic steps to creating your own range of tiles.
Sketching,planning and glazing time: Makers will be guided in the glazing process on their own set of 4 pre-made bisque tiles/coasters. Then you will have a chance to sketch your own, or use provided stencils, to create your patterns and designs.
Create your own set of patterned tiles/coasters.

The class is designed for adults, however, children under the age of 16 are welcome, but must be accompanied by an adult.
